NEEDS ON THE ROAD?
Question:
What would be a good refrigerator and C.B. to purchase for a tractor when starting out. I would like to get in the habit of stocking up on food to try and save money.

Coleman makes a pretty good iceless 12 volt cooler/warmer for around $80.00 at Wal-Mart.
Also, when buying a CB, go for function and quality. There are lots out there to choose from. I have a Cobra 29LTD that I've had for 15 years... Still works fine for me...
Good luck!!

I have the same set-up! When I bought my Coleman it also had the 110 adapter included! That makes it nice to pre-cool before heading out, also depending on who you drive for, I was able to take it into the terminal if I got a bunk for the night! Sure came in handy when I was able to get a hotel room and watch the Falcons whoop up on the Packers in the play-offs!

Walmart has some good buys on coolers right now. Their Coleman is about $68.00. It will work ok. The Igloo works a little better I think but also cost more.
Walmart Coolers
As for a cb. Just get something simple to start with like a Cobra 29. You don't need weather and all the other stuff. It just takes a little away from the power This one at Walmart may not be bad either. Walmart CB
Tuning the cb and a good Mic like an Astatic are a good idea.

Answer:
I personally like Igloo brand 12 volt coolers.
As for CBs...I say go with either Cobra or Uniden.(some parts are interchangeable with these 2 brands.)
What ever CB you decide to go with...
Make Sure that it has 40 channels.(some places you p/u or delv to may use the CB to assign you to a door/dock.)
What ever Cooler you decide to get...
You may want to get the 36qt or the 40qt.

I also have a Coleman 12volt cooler, but I'm just Not Impressed with it.(I basically use it as a "spare".)

Answer:
67.77 at Walmart for a cooler. That is not bad, I thought tat I would be paying about 100 bucks

Answer:
what other things do you put in your cab to make things a little more comfortable?

Answer:
Back to CB's for a minute. I was going to buy the one at wal-mart that Stuffs showed on this thread. My question is what are the major component's to add to a cb to make it work properly and where do you get those type of things. I don't want an echo box and all the bells & whistles. I just want a CB so that I can do what it was designed to do. I also want it to get great reception and be able to talk on it if I need to. I have never had a CB even when I drove regional here in Texas I never had one. I have never been one to really talk on it that much. I mostly want to talk to shipper's and receiver's and traffic updates.
If it ain't broke modify it, that's what I do. Funny thing is it alway's end's up falling apart. Can't quite figure it out.

K - Keep
I - it
S - short &
S - simple
You don't need to have anything more than a good basic radio, a noise cancelling mic and a good, tunable antenna.
Just tune your antenna so you have an SWR (standing wave ratio) as close to 1:1 as you can and you should do just fine. If you don't know how to adjust SWR, go to your local CB radio shop and have them do it for you.. Costs around $15.00 max...
Good luck!

Pillows, books, air ionizer, and whatever you feel comfortable having around. Remember, the cabs aren't very big and you will have severe space limitations....
If you want a TV, get a small AC/DC color around 9" or so. Sam's has one with a DVD player for around $198.00.
Other than that, you'll just have to adjust your comfort items with the space you have....
Good luck!!

thanks for the information. I think I need to go out and price some items tommorrow

Answer:
A good item is a 12volt water heater. A small one that will almost boil the water. Their great for making coffee when you stuck some where.
For the CB a good coax and antenna. A good noise cancelling microphone lets others understand you better. Not much else really needed. Get them from a cb shop or a TS.

They are OVER a hundred bucks (same ones) if you buy them in a truckstop! I spose they are better huh? NOT!
Unka D If you want a TV, get a small AC/DC color around 9" or so. Sam's has one with a DVD player for around $198.00.
I bought a 400w invertor that plugs into the accessory outlet ($39.00) then bought a $69.00 110v TV from Circuit City, that way I will have it to use as a spare at home! The AC/DC ones IMHO are overpriced, I do have one though that is about 15 years old that works great but it's only a 9" and you have to manually tune all the channels on it! The invertor also powers my laptop! Also carried copies of all my reciepts, just in case something were to crap out on the road!
I've been reading about these Burton Portable Stoves, and what I've read seems to be pretty good! Maybe someone who has one can pipe in on this! Sure would save some $$$ and be able to eat warm food right in the truck when you want!
