Here's what I'd do. Since self-employed people may need verification, have a couple of people who know you write letters stating your unemployment status. Also ask your state emplyment counselor if he'd write a letter for you indicating your emplyment status for the past year. BOL

Being unemployed for a year is probably an advantage. They'll think you desperate for work and will put up with anything to keep the job.

As already stated you will need some kind of unemployment verification. This can be done through several different ways depending on your exact situation.
If you were truly self employed and paid taxes simply show you tax records for that time period.
If you were totally unemployed and collected unemployment you can provide your unemployment records as verification.
The final one that will work in either case is to get 2 or 3 people (not family memebers) to write a brief letter stating that you were either unemployed or self employed for the that time frame. Have these people include thier addresses and telephone numbers on the letters and if at all possible have them get the letters notorized.

If your going with Swift and have been unemployed for more than 6 months you just need 2 letters explaining why you were unemployed and you have to have them notorized. Its really not a big deal at all. There was a guy who attended the driving school in my class who hadn'y worked for over 4 years and he got in with no problem.
