How long can a driver expect to drive?
Question:
In years, I mean. I'm 52. If I start this year, in general, how long can I expect to be able to keep it up? Age 60? Age 62? Longer? I'm in good shape and don't look or feel my age. As a company driver, I would have to assume that part of my FICA deductions will be to Social Security, right? Okay, that's enough for you. Thanks. If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too muck space. Answer: You can keep driving as long as you are fit to drive! However, the Social Security Administration might have something to say about that. In other words, driving past age 62 or 65, may cut your Social Security Benefits. ******************************* "I've always been crazy, but it's kept me from going insane!" (from Waylon Jennings) "The feel of the wheel delivers me, from a life where I don't wanna be." (from Joe Stampley) Answer: my aunt and uncle were team drivers, last year she gave it up to stay at home but he still drives full time at the age of 62, i think, but he shows no signs of slowing down, he loves it, she did to, she was featured on the cover of a trucking mag a couple of years ago, i forget why, somthing about being a woman driver with the most miles, or years or somthing ( i should know that ), Dave "Did I do that?" Answer: It really all comes down to an individual thing. Some people need to hang it up around 25 while others may be able to keep on trucking well into their late 60's or 70's. The thing here is you need to be honest with yourself when evalualting if you can still do the job. If you find yourself going 50 mph on a wide open stretch of interstate when the weather is good and the roads even better and you think you are going too fast.....probably a good indicater its time to retire. Only two things I know of are infinite. The universe and human stupidity, and I am not real sure about the universe. I am 68 and just had a DOT physical and everything is fine. I dont run as hard as I used to, dont have to and dont want to. I only work when I want to, if I dont want to work, I tell the man, "find someone else". God has richly blessed me with good health and as long as I have my health, I intend to work. But I will say, driving isnt as fun as it once was. People are so impatient and out of control today. Retirement is for the birds. Just a grouchy old man. Answer: I met a 73 year old flatbedder, from Phoenix, a few years ago at a Sierra Pacific yard in northern Cali. He was doing all the stuff (tarping/securing) I was with no strain. As long as you can pass the physical, you're good to go. BOL Answer: As long as you can pass that Physical every two years---by law; you are in. I meet a lot of "old boys" out there Personally; I plan to retire as soon as I can financially afford to do so, and not a day longer. _________________________ Cover Your Cans People!!!It's apparent this place is never going to change....then again; why should it? In 1998 while at the KC yrd.... I met an 81 yr old Drvr. I must admit that Neither one of them looked their age...They Looked GREAT! I was just concerned that if I got started at 52/53 that I might be looking for another job at 60. Seems not to be the case. If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too muck space. Answer: Local man south of here was still hauling cattle at age 94. Answer: Originally posted by WUZZY/CHARLIE: Local man south of here was still hauling cattle at age 94. [QB] Luckily, cattle can off-load themselves, with a little persuasion! LOL If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too muck space. Answer: KNOW YOUR LIMITATIONS. Be honest with yourself. Like some other posters said, some drivers are done at 25 - 30. Others can go much longer. But, regardless of age, be honest with yourself.
