Question:
http://www.kfor.com/Global/story.asp?S=1279760&nav=6uy5Fq4U
There's a Video that goes along with it.(watch the video)

Answer:
no disrespect, but you get bless for giving not for what the person or persons do with it.and one more thing whats that got to do with truck driving, this is the newbies forum

Answer:
Very Interesting
Since I will soon be working for Swift I now know a new way to make extra money on the side....
But seriously its a shame that these people seem to abuse the bit of money that they do receive. I have always thought that one of the biggest problems with this country. Is that domestic issues always take a backseat to foreign policy.
Sometimes I think there is no hope for any real change out of our government. Its all about money and power in my opinion.
BTW...check out the tornado video too...its cool also.....

Answer:
i`m sorry if i offended you.i read it afterwards and it sounded differently than i attended for it to

Answer:
No Way
You couldn't have offended me in any way. Its a forum, a place to post opinions....
Its all good...............

richlover27: but you get bless for giving not for what the person or persons do with it
Yes, you are so right....we do get blessed for giving & helping others.
BUT, I Don't think it was intended for us to "Help" support another person's DESTRUCTIVE Habits.
Help them get a job...yes...help them get food...yes....help them get shelter...yes...help them get an education...yes.
Help them Kill themselves with Drugs & Alcohol....NO!

--------------------------------------------------------------------
richlover27: whats that got to do with truck driving, this is the newbies forum
Yes, this is a "Newbies", Trking forum....all the more reason I thought it would be Appropriate here.....
Apparently, you are Not a drvr or have Not been one for very long.
b/c if you are/were....you would KNOW the amount of PanHandling that goes on in & around trkstps & other places where trkrs might be.
I posted it here in the "Newbies" forum b/c there is a significant amount of newbies that Fall Prey to these kinds of scams.
As a newbie, you will see & hear some of EVERYTHING....and Believe me, Hard-Luck stories are a dime-a-dozen.
No, I'm Not saying that ALL of these panhandlers are scammers.(I'm quite sure that some of them are Legit.)
All I'm saying is to Use Your INSTINCTS & go with your "gut" feeling.
There will be times when you are "lead" to give money & there will be times when you are "lead" to give Food & there are times that you are "lead" to give NOTHING.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
When I was a trnr I saw soooo many newbies quit within their first 6wks b/c they THOUGHT the company was ripping them off & b/c every time they called home their spouse was on their case for NOT having any money to send home.
They didn't have any money b/c....
1)They kept taking out Cash Advances.(which is a "LOAN" on monies that has NOT been earned yet...BUT, as soon as it is earneed, the company makes sure the "LOAN" gets repaid.)
***A Cash Advance is NOT Free Money from the company!***
By the time the company takes out for the "LOAN" there is Not much left to send home to the spouse.
2)Drvrs Spending Money FOOLISHLY....
Eating Every meal in the trkstp or playing video games in the trkstp arcade or "partying" with the guys or blowing(pun intended) it on Lot-Lizards or buying t-shirts & big belt buckles that they can NOT afford & do NOT need or buying big CBs with all the bells & whistles or buying a lot of chrome for their company trk or paying for tolls out of their pocket that the company will Not reimburse for.(I think you get my msg)
3)Being SCAMMED...by PanHandlers & other Tricks prone to trkdrvrs.(cards, dominoes, gambling, etc)
------------------------------------------------------------------
All I'm trying to say is....
*Be WISE with your Money, newbies...
As a newbie you're Not making much as it is, so it's Extremely Important to Hold On to All You Can.(at least until you can AFFORD to Throw It Away.)
You'd really be surprised to know how Fast & Easy Money gets AWAY from you while you're OTR.(those dollars here & there really start to add up...or...shall I say....really start to DISAPPEAR FAST.)

Answer:
All I can say is
Well put choclit snda!

I found that article to be very biased and not well written. I suppose you could find some importance in it, just not to much. I also didn't see a scam in what they were doing. All I saw was a reporters need for print, some way to prove he is important. If you give to needy people with the right intentions you've done good for yourself. If you need to be told whats right and whats wrong, well, good luck.
I also don't see much problem with having some fun at a TS if you want, why not. Play some games watch a movie and relax. Truck driving isn't all about living like a hermit and picking up pennys in parking lots. We are people and should be able to enjoy ourselves a little. All work and no play is a bad thing. Of course we all, or at-least most of us, have bills at home and things we have to take care of. Make sure you do whats right and try to enjoy yourself.

When I was a kid returning to college from some break, I gave a hitcher a lift, and almost as soon as he got settled in my pickup, he asked me for a few bucks for a sandwhich. I told him I was tight (which was an understatement), but I'd give him a roast beef sandwich my mom had sent with me. He didn't like roast beef. I also had a couple ham sandwiches so I offered him one of those, but was again declined. I said sorry I can't be any more help, but I'd be hungry enough to eat a bussard sandwich before I'd go asking for help...now get out of my pickup.
A few years later I was in town with my girl friend when we saw a "will work for food" guy. I pondered aloud whether the guy was serious, and was criticized by my girlfriend for my cynical suggestion. I had some grain bins to sweep so I pulled up and asked the guy if he was interested. He just stammered and said he was really just needing a couple bucks donation. An hour later I saw the guy at Mc Chokes eating dinner during his lunch break.
One of my heros is a 55 year old Okie that literally grew up inhabiting a cave/dugout and hand picking cotton instead of going to grade school. He financed his 5 children's college educations by cutting firewood nights and weekends off from his regular job. A decent advance for one generation eh? He once said "there's just too much work out there that needs doing to be without a job very long."

A few years ago rich kids from edina mn, were downdressing going downtown minneapolis and panhandling for fun money.

Answer:
I'm NOT saying that drvrs should NEVER have Fun.(playing video games, spending Foolishly, splurging on High Priced trkstp food, etc.)
I'm ALL FOR Having FUN....I think I'm the "Queen-of-Fun."
Heck, I've even fed quarters to the "One-Arm-Bandits" a few times....BUT, I made darn sure that I had the NECCESSITIES Taken care of FIRST(bills caught up, insurance paid, money in Savings,etc)...AND....I did NOT go crying the Blues when I Lost it all, either.
You see, I have a container that I call "My Entertainment Fund."(it's a plastic container I put loose change in; so that when/if I happen to get a "Wild-Hair" I will have money to blow.)
I also have a place in my BUDGET that I take (X) amount out of my paycheck & put it in my "Entertainment Fund".
All I'm saying is...
Don't Take Your Last Dollar & Blow It Foolishly, then start Crying the Blues about How You are Not making any money & that you don't have enough money for lunch the next day.
I guess my ears are a little worn out from hearing so many drvrs take their LAST $20 & give it to a LIZARD or take their LAST $20 Dollars & play video games with it ....THEN....they go outside & get on the CB & COMPLAIN about being 2 mnths BEHIND on Child Support.
Don't get me wrong....I realize that $20 may not help much when a person is a few grand Behind on child support....but, gee whiz...at least $20 would be a START to getting caught up on support payments.
------------------------------------------------------------------
*It seems like the people that are "itching" about NOT having any money are the SAME ones that are Blowing Money FOOLISHLY.

You know I think this is the perfect kind of question for this thread. As a newbie myself (about to start school), there are alot of unknowns. I am starting a completely new industry and I'll be learning skills that are foreign. But its the incidentals that really concern me.
I have only run across panhandlers when I'm in the city, or when I take long trips in my car, and get out to use the rest room at a hiway rest area. The first time someone came up to me and told me they needed a few bucks to get home I almost gave it to them, until I asked myself what a teen-ager was doing in a rest area at that time of night???
