Keeping Century Windshield Clean
Question:
Recently moved into a '03 Century and having a dickens of a time keeping the windshield clear in snow and rain, and especially in light freezing rain.
Seems that while driving at highway speed, the slightest wind will lift the driver's side wiper nearly off the glass. Meanwhile, the passenger side works fine.
Any tips on keeping a Century windshield clean? (Aside from moving the vehicle controls to the right side of the cab.)
In a related vein, one kind old head taught me to keep the defroster off during cold snowstorms to prevent snow from sticking to the glass.

Answer:
I think they're called wiper keepers. Had the same problem on my Pete. Bought a set and put 'em on, problem fixed.
Any Chrome Shop or place that sells Big Truck Accessories will have them. Think mine cost like $8 bucks.

Answer:
Is like that on many cars. The springs in the wiper arm are too week for the length of wiper blade it is attached to, and then add to it the sloped windshield and you get some nice lift on the blade.
As Hoss suggested one way to fix the problem is to purchase some wiper huggies. These are pieces of metal about 6 inches long or so with hooks at each end. They do help but if the spring is especially weak then you will still get that lift and the only answer will be to get the arm replaced.
One final thing you can do. Try some Rain-X on your windshield. There is enough slope on the Century Class based models for it to do some good. Just be sure to use it very sparingly.
FYI: The spring should be strong enough to create at least 1 lb of downward force for every 1 inch of wiper blade. A fish scale can tell you how strong the spring is. Just be sure to remove the wiper blade first so that the weight of the blade doesnt throw off your measurements.

"A fish scale can tell you how strong the spring is. Just be sure to remove the wiper blade first so that the weight of the blade doesnt throw off your measurements." Thats a good idea. I like Hoss's idea better but that will work. Just don't let the arm slip out of you hand and hit the windshield or you'll find you'll need a new one.

Answer:
If you take your truck to a truck wash while on the road, make DARN SURE that YOU TAKE THEM OFF, before they pull your wiper blades back!
If you don't it'll "spring 'em" and then you gotta either try to bend them back into shape or buy new ones.
I've had to bend mine back a couple times because of this.
BTW, get you a couple pairs of "winter blades". Put one pair on and store the other pair for when you need a replacement pair.
Ain't nothing worse than a pair of crappy wiper blades.

Answer:
Is a fix to a point and that was the only point I was trying to make. I once had a truck that I tried the snuggy fix on and it did no good. When I finally checked the tension I had 9 lbs on an 18 in blade. Those wiper arm snugs will only add a few extra pounds of tension.
Great point about the arms getting bent and sprung. It is also hard on those arms just bending them up to the full upright position to clean your windshield.

Answer:
I try to use Rain X on everything.

Answer:
RainX is an excellent product, but from my experience, don't put it on your mirrors, side windows, or rear windows... They don't get enough wind to keep the water running off, so all it does it just leave you with a nice glob pattern of water, that is hard to see off of... especially when you are driving in mist.
