If you haven't, why not? Does your school even teach it? If not, WHY not? I'd be runnin' away from that school
I feel this is one of the biggest tools that drivers can use, because it can be summed up in ONE word...and that word is AWARENESS!
Not only that, but it also teaches COMMUNICATION with other drivers (Make Sure They See You).
Those two make a deadly combination as far as avoiding most accidents goes. If you COMMUNICATE to the other drivers sharing the road with you, they then become AWARE of you. If they know you are there, they are less likely to run into you, unless they have been drinking, or otherwise get distracted.
But let me ask you veteran drivers this - has the Smith System worked for you? Have there been times when you've used it, and it HASN'T worked for you?
I'm just throwing this out there to give you new drivers something to consider as you choose this for your career.
Heck, it's even valuable in a 4-wheeler!

Had the Smith System back in the mid-60s. Went through it again last year.
You know how it really got started? A truck driver by the name of Smith actually started the Smith System. I understand that he just put down on paper what he was doing in his own driving and from there was born "THE SMITH SYSTEM"

I took the 1 day version of the Smith system. I learned alot from it, and recognized some of the bad habits I had developed over the years. I've taken a couple of motorcycle safety courses that stressed most of the same things..

Driver, the Smith System has been around a long time. If you look at it closely,it's just common sense trucking. Ninety nine percent of accidents can be avoided by keeping your eyes open and keeping a large enough "cushion" between yourself and what is around you,ie: don't run next to someone for a long period of time, if someone tailgates you, back off a bit, and never ever tailgate. Be Safe!

If you are instructed in the Smith System, and can get a card certifyimg such, you may qualify for a discount from your auto insurance compnay. I did, a pretty good discount at that.

My school didn't teach it, but fortunatly it was learned through out our classroom lessons. I think I really heard about the Smith System when I went to Willis Shaw for my orientation. All I know is that it for sure come in handy for me.

Easier to do than the 10 Commandments, easier to remember than the Amendments to the Constitution, the Smith System works. Even the name is easy to remember. I taught my kids this while they were learning to drive a car. They roll their eyes when I ask them to name them all, but it's in their brains. And it's starting to become part of their driving style. It's so simple, and so effective.
According to Charles Kuralt, "Thanks to the Interstate Highway System, it is now possible to travel across the country from coast to coast without seeing anything."

I learned Smith system in drivers ed in the 80's and it still makes sense.
While teaching the Motorcycle Rider courses we use S.I.P.D.E. Scan Identify Predict Decide and Execute.
Using both methods concurently is most effective, and will usually keep you out of trouble. If you practice them regularly they become second nature.
Another cool technique motorcycle racers use is training your periferal vision to be accurate. In other words training your vision to fully accurate instead of only focusing on what is directly in front of you. Try it out by watching television while focusing directly on something over the top of the screen. Once you get good at it its amazing what you see.
Using these techniques have allowed me to become a much better driver. Downside is as I've gotten more proficient I tend to drive a little too fast on occasion.

I found the Smith System was very interesting, helpful, and showed me how and what to do , to become a better driver. Realized some things that i didnt do and SHOULD be doing!! I think this should be a requirement to obtaining your cdl.
