Thrusday went out for my 5th. road trip. Drove around Chester Pa. Drove the Volvo with the U shift pattern for the first time Loved it. Some people had a heck of a time with it, however I did great with it, after getting used to the rpms. dropping so slowly. Finally got to get to the truck up over 40mph, 55 feels like a 100 in the darn thing. Gess it is just the size of it and having so much going on.
Man you really have to have your head moving like the taco bell dog, to know whats up around the truck. Really screwed up when we pulled out of the yard though, don't know what the heck I was thinking. It is a real tight turn where you can usally get 2nd, but I had to inch out farther to see and still tried for 2nd. Needless to say I over shoot the turn and the instructor had get out and back me up. After that the day went real smooth.Specializing in marine repairs: Inboard, Outboard, and I/O's.

If that was the worst thing to happen to you, you had a really good first day!

Answer:
that was the worst I have done yet. But remembering the offtracking on curves is tough. I always do good on turns because I'm only in 3rd gear tops. But the curves always seem to get me. Guss I need to think ahead to stay left for the rights and right for the lefts oh well 15 more trips to go I think I can get it down in that Specializing in marine repairs: Inboard, Outboard, and I/O's.

I admit the school I went to preached being inside 3 ft of the curbs and corners. But when I got to actual OJT the first thing they taught us is wider is better, just make sure you cover your territory and watchout for those 4 wheelers in a hurry to get some where who like to sneek up beside you.

Today at school I had another road trip. I drove up market street for awhile then all the way down broad on the way back to the school. Went pretty well, but was hard as h*ll b/c of how tight it was. 4whellers and Septa buses cuting me off left and right. Started out ok with the shifting 'till the instructor pissed me off, then some how The shifting was flawless.
He is hollering at me go get going. Well there is lights EVERY BLOCK, people at every cross walk, and delevery truck everywhere. So I sit at a light b/c the traffic at the next light is backed up to my light. He yells WHY THE HELL ISN'T THIS TRUCK MOVING? So I say well I can't block the intersection, I know I won't clear it b/c it's a stail green! WHY DID YOU STOP THE LIGHT IT'S GREEN? So I say state law yield to pedestians at crosswalk!
Well after 20min. of this I get pissed and hammerd down. Slamming grears, didn't miss or grind a gear the rest of the day. We get out of the city and are heading back to the school and he says good job. I think to myself where the h*ll did this come from? Then after all his hollering to get moving I'm on I-95 doing 55mph (the speed limit) and he says lay off a little don't want a ticket do you? So he catches me mumble. Make up your mind!
Well back at the yard he gives me my highest road score yet 8pts higher than the last trip, and tells me I'm doing real good and I'm a good driver. I said thanks, but thought thanks wacko!Specializing in marine repairs: Inboard, Outboard, and I/O's.

You will find some trainers take some delight in yanking your chain.
Crossing the intersection isn't a good idea when you know you won't have enough room for the rear of the trailer to clear the pedestrian walk on the other side.

Road trip again today! Did real well I drove for two hours so it was concidered two trips. We are scored by 1-5 on all the areas of driving (ie: right/left turns, Smith sys., space/speed mangment, ect...) and with the same intstructor as yeasterday I got all fours on both trips for a total of 64 pts. each trip.
Drove through Chester and surounding area. Less traffic and more room to play with. Played alot with tight right turns and some left turns. Towards the end He said make a right at 2nd light, so I do but wasn't out to the yellow far enough and took curb. Said can we do it again? He said 'till you get it right, So I said good now don't help me unless I'm going to wreck! So I go around the block and come back did it about seven or eight times. The second I was out far enough but turned to soon, but after that I nailed it every time.
So we pressed on and since there was so little traffic I played with my down shifting, did great with it. I did some more tight turns and had no problems with them. Seemed like we got along alot better today. He was more relaxed and wasn't jumping on me for stupid sh*t like yesterday. After today I'm ready to do the center city thing again and ace it with any of the instuctors in the worst of moods. Specializing in marine repairs: Inboard, Outboard, and I/O's.

Did great on road today. Drove up 95 for aways and then some surface roads. Instructor didn't really say much so I know it was a good trip. Today's instructor is one who is kind of layed back, but he lets you know when you screw up. Only real complaint is don't palm wheel when turning and don't ride clutch. I don't ride the clutch, I do leave my foot over it while running through the gears 'till about 5th or 6th.

Today was fun! I got to play with the road trucks in the yard. Had to move all the road trailers to a different spot b/c a guy was sopose to come with a load of stone for that part of the range. First time I really got to back up trailers into a real spot not just in between cones. Did good set meyself up for a couple different types of backing monuvers. While playing with th coupling I did screw up on the trid trailer Reversed the air lines and put the emergency to the service and the service to the emergency. noticed real quick when the truck didn't move. Spent a couple hours studing for my haz-mat got to go to the DMV and get that tommorow. Should hopfullr be easy was getting 95+ on the school computers, so I think I'm ready Specializing in marine repairs: Inboard, Outboard, and I/O's.

Road today, Did real well we ran broad st. and Market st. around City Hall again. I did good have had Better days, but over all very good. I was on the ball with the Smith Sys. checking the mirrors, keeping the space to the sides/front/back. And out of all the times I had to dump the right lane for double parkers I only had one time when I didn't leave enough room for the off tracking. It was easly taken care of though I just had to go hard left and take alittle of the opposing traffices lane. Made sure no one was comming, don't need an accident in school. THAT CAN WHAT 'TILL I'M ON MY OWN
Well thats trip 12 only two more before I road final, guess I need to get the stupid habits out of system real quick huh. The Instructors say I don't do anything that will fail me on CDL DAY so I just need to perfect what I know and learn what I don'tSpecializing in marine repairs: Inboard, Outboard, and I/O's.

More road today just local south Philly. because we were sent out one person at a time. They had to do this because my class graduates next week and we need road, range, and pre-trip finals. I went out first then came back by 9:30 and spent the rest the day on the range praticing skills and pretrip. Got pretrip down pat. My way is if is on the truck it needs to work so I say say the part, Out of the 108pts. we need to know I probaly say 200pts. Well can't fail me for that it can only help.
Instructor said if I drive like I did today I will have know problems with the CDL test. I love it I do so well because I got past the point of THIS THING IS HUGH, and now I am more relaxed while just as aware. I still need to talk myself through truns and I still say watch off-tracking ten times around a bend. But that will wear off eventualy. The skills are easy to me now but I have had 14 weeks to practice them so the'd better be easy. I hope and feel that the CDL test will be a breaze. Will post tommorow with the results from my range and pretrip finals.Specializing in marine repairs: Inboard, Outboard, and I/O's.
