tailgating
Question:
i travel a short section of i-75 and i-696 here in mi. almost every day to and from work. i cant beleive the amount, distance and speed of people tailgating . more than half i see are cars tailgating trucks. the last example today was a car not 6-8 feet behind a truck rolling about 60-65 mph.! how do you tolerate these types of drivers day after day?

Answer:
The way I handle it is to just control the things I can, such as my follwing distance, speed, lane choice, ect. When you drive every day on all kinds of roads and different conditions you get into a kind of groove that allows you to be aware of what is going on around you and not letting it bother you too much. Traffic goes in phases if I dont feel comfortable with the others that are around me at the time I will slow down or perhaps speed up to lose them. Most commuters dont want to be behind a truck, some even think they are the only ones that really have to get somewhere, the rest of us are just driving around.

In such cases, the trucks operator likely doesn't know it's that close behind, and if he does, it is but a minor annoyance likely. Reverse the vehicle's positions and you have a very different situation. In either case, it is a problem of epedimic proportions.

Answer:
The true professional just keeps rolling down the road and does not let it get to him. You learn the things you can and can not control and then you control what you can, keep an eye out for what you can't in case it truly becomes a problem (ie the person who tailgates more than likely will end up cutting back in too close when he/she finally decides to pass).
If you notice a tailgater the best thing to do is to very gradually slow down slightly to increase your following distance to minimize the chances of having to brake hard, closely watch the other lanes of traffic, and have an updated (second by second) plan on what you are going to do if traffic comes to a sudden stop directly in front of you.
Only two things I know of are infinite. The universe and human stupidity, and I am not real sure about the universe.

the Johnny bar to make my brake lites come on. Works sometimes but not always.

Answer:
most of these idiots have never EATEN a blown truck tire
I never ride near or behind a big truck. I give lots of room, and I hope that others do the same with me .
If I get close it is because I am passing. I get it moving and pass, give lots of room and signal, move back over. I dont try to wipe the paint off the front of the trucks bumper as I move back over.
Pisses me off, so I dont do it to others.

When I'm pulling doubles and triples, a little wiggle of the wagons gets them off my tail. Don't you just hate those grooves in the road?
