Want to Drive/No Home Time Needed
Question:
Hello!! I'm about to retire after 30-years in the fire service and want to begin a new career driving OTR. I have a spotless CDL-B license. For 28-years I've been an "engineer"... the person who drives the pumper or ladder truck. I've been a "trainer" for 10-years and an in-house driver qualifier authorized by the state DOT. The Fire Dept is in the mountains so I've had plenty of snow driving, chaining, and using a Jake. Additionally, I spent the last school year driving a school bus on a part-time basis. (there's some interesting driving...!!!) I have just graduated from a truck driving school and received my CDL-A. I have all the CDL endorsements. "Home time" is not important to me. I'd like to be based out of Colorado. I Want to DRIVE!!! I need a company which will take a "graduate" and provide plenty of driving. Any Suggestions..???? Thanks for your time. Be Safe!! Answer: If you already have your CDL and you don't know who to go to work for, you're late. Any of the entry level companies like Werner, Swift, Schneider will hook you up. BOL Answer: Visit sites with multiple on line applications. Submit your info to all the companies there and then see who calls you. Ask lots of questions about what is important to you and see then hire on with whoever you feel will meet your needs. There is such an application here at truck net. TruckNet Job site Also some other sites: layover.com classadrivers.com 1800drivers.com www.everytruckjob.com I will always be a mutter trucker at heart. Answer: When you go online to look at companies, try to find out where their terminals are. If it's not on the web site, call a recruiter and ask. That way, you'll find out if you can be based out of a terminal in your state of Colorado. I am sort of surprised that your CDL school did not do anything to try to place you in a job. But nothing's lost. You can do this search yourself, especially since you have access to the Internet. With your experience and already posessing at CDL class A, you should have no problem getting hired with one of the large OTR companies that hires drivers with no tractor/trailer experience. And since you don't even require a certain amount of hometime, that will not be a problem either. Basically, just pick what color truck you want to drive! About hometime, you can take "hometime" wherever you want. You do not have to take it only when a load takes you near your home. If you arrange it with dispatch, you can take your hometime in any city you wish. This is an easy way to get out of the truck once in a while, see sights, or even visit family/friends. In your situation, it's something to think about. Answer: dang it...double posted! Answer: You might give Watkins-Shepard a call, they are headquartered in Montana but also have a terminal in Denver. They hire drivers out of school. FFE is another one-Denver terminal as well. Good luck to ya! Answer: FireGears, Check into Davis Transport in Missoula, MT. 100% flatbed, 1700 mile average length of haul, out for 4-8 weeks at a time. Very friendly, family type outfit. They DO take newbies.
