Week 5 of 16 - truck driving school
Question:
Here's my 5th week at truck driving school finished Friday, September 27, 2002. Monday: Began training on doubles/triples, hazmat, and tankers in preparing for the CDL endorsements. Drove the circuit the opposite way - wow, the turns are different! Watched a video on hazardous materials. Drove more on the circuit. Tuesday: Interaction between instructor and class--critiquing of our turning, the need for watching before, during and after making the turns (heavy emphasis on this!), emphasis on planning, positioning and watching in preperation for making turns. Drove more of the circuit. Practiced driving the Super-10. Wednesday: More discussion on left and right turning. Watched video on turning.. Instructor couldn't emphasize enough on position well before attempting to make a turn. WATCH THE MIRRORS! Take the space you have and need. Talked about real world turns verses "theory." Be safe. Practiced these techniques on the circuit. (Man, you have to watch; the instructor will drive right up to your right side to see if you're watching.) Former student came in to the class and talked with us about how driving has gone for him since the course. He emphasized the need to really know backing up procedures. Thursday: Review of yesterday's discussions on positioning and mirror usage. Watched a video on perceiving hazards (hey, that was pretty good. They catch you on things you're normally not watching for because you're busy trying to watch for what you think they're trying to catch you on!) Had orientation for the . . . "rodeo" course. Gads! It's a 10-spot course on the parking lot set up with cones, barrels, this, that and the what-have-you. Calls for us to make 10 tight maneuvers to get through it. Sheesh! (But it's worth it!) Friday: Finished some textbook work on turns. Drove the circuit, backup alley, and started some of the rodeo. Went home bushed! Well, till next week! Doing some blind-side backing today. You bet I was out looking! Gads, is that tough. That convex is a nightmare. But I'll get used to it!
