8LL transmission
Question:
I've looked at different truck ads and I've seen alot of these transmissions in heavy trucks like dump trucks. How do you shift them, what is the pattern is what I'm wondering.

Answer:
It's really pertty easy trapper, have you driven a 13 speed? The lower gears are about the same, I would have said same, but i am sure someone would have corrected me.
How I did it was simple, if I was loaded I would start out in first or low(if I was on a BIG hil, id use the deep reduction) First till you get just enough RPM's to make the shift, then hold out the next shift another 1-200 RPM's, increasing RPM's by small increments untill I shifted from third. Here is the trick to this, like was stated in an earlier post, there is a "hidden" gear in Eaton 8,9,and I belive 13 speeds. Where you have the deep reduction on the low side, there is actually a "hidden" gear there that I used. Its almost the same as "4th" but not quite, its a little shallower. I belive, however right or wrong, the quicker you can make the split, the better off you are, so instead of shifting into fourth, I go from 3rd to the hidden gear.
Another place this is helpfull, is rush hour traffic, or going around corners, where you would normally use 4th, its much easier not to do the split, but rather use the hidden gear.
Another way I use this transmission, when empty is,(and I am not saying its right, but mabe a bad habbit)when i stop, rather then starting out in first, I shift to third gear, in the deep reduction(or LL).
The way I do this is, Start out in third gearLL, bring the RPM's up to about 1500 and flip the reduction button back up and let off the throttle(you will feel it catch the gear), get back on it, and continue shifting. When I am empty, I do alot of "skip shifting", thats winding up the engine a little more to shift 2 gears up instead of 1. For example I do this. Start out in third gear Low rang, split to normal third gear, make the split to the hidden gear, skip 5th and goto 6th gear, depending upon the situation, I may skip 7th also and go right to 8th. Every person and situation is different, so do whats right for you and your skill level.
Any more questions about what I wrote here, just ask again, I will give as many pointers as I can.

Answer:
If your just going tobe driving OTR it will be pretty rare you will be driving a truck with a 8LL they are mostly used in construction trucks. With the Low Low gear its used for offroad I never driven a truck with one the trucks I have driven were all 13spds most common transmisson in the dump trucks around here. A 18spd is about the best transmission you can get your able to split all the bottom and top gears.

I have the extreme pleasure of driving a Mack roll-off truck that has an Eaton-Fuller 8LL in it.The only times I've had to use lo-lo was on sandy or muddy ground for best traction and pulling power without bogging down until I can get out to hard ground or the big road. Other than that, the lowest I ever have to go is regular lo gear on upgrade with a heavy load. It's a switch that is on the left side of gear shift handle and you just push it forward with your thumb when your in lo or reverse to give you the slow gradual power you need in the conditions I stated above. But other than that it's the same thing as driving a truck with a straight 10 except it don't have 9 and 10 of course.

Answer:
A 8LL has got the same gear pattern as the 13spd and the 18spd 8ll L 1-2-3-4 Range 5-6-7-8
13spd L 1-2-3-4 Range 5/5od 6/6od 7/7od 8/8od 18spd 1/1od 2/2od 3/3od 4/4od Range 5/5od 6/6od 7/7od 8/8od
I drove Mack rolloff truck aswell it was a MR series with Maxidyne power and Mack 8spd the tranny was hard to get use to the little 6 cylinder Mack had some good lugging power thou.
