Will local trucking companies hire a newbie and train them?
Question:
I just got to thinking, there are about 50 some odd trucking companies in my town listed in the phone book, and was wondering if i just showed up to their office if they would hire me? (I mean, train me) Ive been looking at going all over the country for training to get my CDL, but I just wondered if any of these companies would hire someone, and then train them on their own equipment and then put em to work. Anyone think I could have any luck calling the companies? Any pointers if I decide to go this route? Would it be better to go in person and ask?

Answer:
Most likly you will have to go to truck driving school or in some cases large fleets like Schneider National, Mills Transfer, etc have truck driving schools of their own where you will train on their equipment and take your test on their equipment. But dont expect to get that tractor you tested on when you start on your own especially with Schneider. Cabovers are your first truck if you go with them.
The problem with going in and asking them if they would train you, is that in most instances you will have to sign a contract for at most a year of solid work. You quit before your contract is up, than you will have to pay the remaining of the truck driving school tuition.
Your better off getting the money, and going to an independent truck driving school. To my knowledge, only the large fleets offer this training. If you want to go to a smaller company, you will probably have to go to an independent trucking school. Than once you have passed, you can come back and if they accept newbies, than they might hire you and they will set you up with a trainer and off you go.

Answer:
Doubt if that will happen, the local jobs usually are full of guys like me who have been out there for a while and don't want to live on the road anymore.
are we there yet?

Answer:
Here most excavation & redi mix company require experience w/ a on/off road truck when ya apply for a job w/ them .
I was raised in farming & logging & excavation business so construction & farm & logging trucks have always been a part of my life .
We have a driver who is vesitile he can go from a OTR truck to a dumpwagon & lowbow & log to a bob & cotton moudle truck (he also works for a local gin during harvest season ) & never forget & miss a beat with which one he is in Adriver like him is hard to find nowadays .
Alot of your older drivers are veristle compared to a lot of younger ones who were trained in a OTR Truuck.& never got the experince of a on/off road truck .
Alot of your older ones (& some younger ones like myself)were bought up on farms & in the fileds or the woods learning to drive farm , construction & log trucks
Ive seen drivers that come from schinder for a few years & get tired of the road & go to a local ltl carrier w/o any problems (i.e. yellow freight & roadway )
but also seen some get hired on my excavation companys & redimix companys & tear a 8LL outta truck in a heart beat by trying to speed shift a small h.p. motor like a big h.p. motor or a 2Stroke Jimmy & be fired the same day they were hired for tearing the tranny out . (i seen the 8LL THEY TOre up & the gears were as smoothas a Babys Asre )
Just my 2 cents yall & yall have a safeone
