best place to live for getting hometime?
Question:
I am single. i do not own real estate. i can live anywherrer iwant in the lower 48 states. where is the best place ot live for getting hometime. should i post this in a forum where experienced drivers will see it? do many experienced drivers view this forum?

Answer:
When you're shopping for a company to drive for, ask if they have shippers or receivers in the area where you live.
That way, you'll be better assured of either getting a load going home, or for sure having one when you're ready to go out again. BOL

Answer:
It all depends on the carrier. Every carrier has different routes and traffic lanes. Most large carriers with dedicated routes and they will try and find one that will work for you. Schneider even lists their dedicated routes on their website, last time I checked.
Also certain types of freight can help in where to live. For instance if you want to haul produce live in Washington, California, Florida, or anywhere else where alot of produce is grown. If you want to haul furniture or carpet check out Georgia. Steel- Michigan and Indiana. Dairy products- Wisconsin, Minnesota, California.
Ya get my point?

Answer:
If you see a lot of Swift or Werner or whatever running on the freeway near you--chances are you can get through the house fairly often.
Most freight runs in the West Coast or on the East Coast. If you don't care where you live, ask the company where they run the most.
OTR is gonna be 3-4 days a month home. Maybe every two weeks (but expect to drop the load at 2 AM Saturday morning and be ready for pickup at 3 AM Sunday.) OTR companies have a very liberal interpretation of the term "weekend."
May you be well and happy!

Answer:
I know a little about Florida. Most major carriers will not give you much home time here. That is one of the reasons I never went with a large company. Looking at the highway for frequency of trucks in SW Florida isn't a good idea. You will see certain ones but that doesn't mean their drivers come here much. Companies such as Stevens can be seen at Grandmas kitchen regularly (I75 old exit 24). You'll see alot of them there. But you can expect 4-6 weeks out with them. You'll also see CRST who told me they have a 2-3 out program except for here. It's a minimum of 4 weeks.
As said above ask the companies your interested in where their travel lanes are. Hopefully they will know and tell you. Atlanta is good, kind of a hub as is Phoenix.

Answer:
ANYWHERE along a major east-west Interstate highway, such as I-10, I-40, I-70, I-80, or I-90. You can live within, say, 20 miles of said highway, and count on your best opportunity for hometime, along with getting great miles.....

Answer:
If you are going to haul general commodities I would say somewhere in the middle.

Some comments.
Since you can and will 'move to suit', why do you care about hometime? If you mean home time is just time off, take weekends off wherever you want to be. Become a true dweller.
If you need a place to keep some of your stuff - and establish a 'home address', and don't plan to own property, I'd recommend a State without State income tax. Tennessee, Texas, Florida, New Hampshire, Alaska, Nevada, and Washington come to mind.
When I drove OTR, (and if you don't buy into the 'keep-away' theory that says companies will send you anywhere but home) I found Tennessee was definitely the center of the universe...
