Local Driving in Florida
Question:
Hello,
First of I know that most "local driving" companies require a year or more experience before they will consider hiring you on so I may be answering my own question here. That being said are there any companies that I could look into for local driving here in Florida? I do not have my CDL so I would have to go to school first unless I could find a company hiring that would put me to work and train me to get my cdl. (I know Con-way used to do that but don't know if they still do or are even hiring.)
Thanks for any input!
Tim
Answer:
I doubt there's such a thing as a local company that will hire a newbie with no CDL, then train from the ground up. Even the OTR companies who hire trainees with no CDL require them to sign a legally binding contract that obligates trainees to pay for the the training, unless they stay at least one year to work off their training fees debt. From a companies' perspective, its a sizable investment in cost to set up a training program. Besides the equipment and hiring a trainer, theres the insurance factor. Insurance companies will likely charge extra to insure a company that will take on trainees with no prior experience, let alone a valid CDL. Then theres the possibility the trainee will resign and go with another carrier after they've invested so much time and $$ into training a newbie and helping them get their CDL. The only advantage for a company to start a training program is the tax write off incentive. Thus, the disadvantages outweighs the advantage of starting a training program. If you want training with little or no out-of-pocket cost, you'll have to go with the OTR companies. If one in your area is not available, you'll have to spend food and lodging cost while training at a distant facility. To start out as a newbie driver, you'll have to spend time and $$ to make $$. If training cost is a deterrent, consider looking into government assistance to borrow $$ to fund your training.

Answer:
Call on the phone: Commercial Carrier in Florida.
Or ComCar Industries in Florida.
They train on their own Equipment, even for local.
I don't know if they have a CDL school
