Got a new job...truck driving instructor!
Question:
It looks as though I will be starting a new adventure with my CDL. I got a job with CNM, a community college here in Albuquerque, NM as a part time driving instructor. They offer a 12 week CDL program. I have to attend a "Faculty Orientation" on Tuesday and will hopefully start soon after. Here is the good part...pay is $30.63 an hour. That is much more than I make at my full time job! I apppied over a year ago and finally got a call to interview two weeks ago. The interview was not just an interview...it was an oral board that included an on the spot 5 minute presentaiton on a trucking subject of my choice. It was a hard interview, second only to my promtion board here at the Fire Dept. I will keep you all posted...riding around with students behind the wheel will take some getting used to! Answer: Been doing it for 4 yrs now.....................Keep it out, keep it out .............LOOK OUUT! your goin hit the curb !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You f****kin moron...............loook in your mirror !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Welcome to the "Club" '' Answer: I envy you pal. I really do. Sounds like a great job. I've looked into it. The private driving schools here don't pay squat and I'm not sure I'd want to do their brand of 'teaching" anyway. Some of the classroom instructors are killing time till they can get their CDL back... But the CC you're describing so far -- and the money -- sounds pretty good. Congratulations. Patience. .http://www.weather.gov/forecasts/graphical/sect...onusWeek.php#tabs Answer: Ive been offered a part time instructor job at our community college. Ive been considering it for a few months now and cant seem to make the decision. It pays pretty decent ($22/hr), not what youre making but better than driving. One of the main reasons Im on the fence about the job is I dont really feel qualified to do it. Ive only been driving for about 2 years. I have confidence in myself as a driver, Im just a little worried about teaching others to drive. Another reason Im hesitant is that I really dont like driving. How do I encourage others to do it when I dont like it. Both valid reasons to not take the job, but it does pay well and it gets me off the road (at least some of the week). Its the classic "Do I worry about others or do I take care of number one first". Answer: Answer: Little update... I have to attend a 3hr sexual harrassment course on Wednesday and an 8hr defensive driving course on Friday. I have not yet scheduled my 3hr OSHA training course..after that it should be on the road with students! Answer: Keep us posted on how you like it. I just started driving with another company but Im still thinking about taking the instructor job. bunker, just out of curiosity, how long have you been driving? Like I said, Ive been offered a part time instructor position but the only thing thats holding me back is my lack of experience. Ive been driving big trucks for a little over two years but the first year and a half were shuttling and spotting trailers, only about 9 months actually delivering loads to customers. i was talking to a trainer at my present company, he used to teach at the same school Ive been offered a job at and he basically said it stressed him out to sit in the passenger seat while students drove. thats why he quit. Answer: Be sure to tell your students to visit us.Government Ain't YO' Friend. Nor your Servant. A Tax Reduces Incentive & Capacity. A Regulation is also a TAX. Answer: I have had my class A CDL since April of 2000. I have a little over 300K miles OTR and the rest has been driving fire trucks. I might get flamed for saying that but that is my experience and I got the job. They require 5 years of truck driving experience. Answer: Shouldn't be a real problem,. One of the main issues that you are going to be spending time on is handling and backing, and a spotter should be a wealth of info on that part of the job. You aren't going to teach them a lot about OTR driving, concentrating on local and city driving with the students. Sitting in the seat can be a bit nervewracking, but you can probably adjust to that.As long as the paperwork's clean, you boys can do whatever you want to out on the road" Mad Max ...1979 Answer: Hey.. Congrats! Sounds like a alright gig! I actualy forgot about teaching as a job. I think I will look into this alternative side to trucking... I might need somthing else in my future years to keep me busy and there is a community college near my house that has a CDL class.. I hear they are pretty well known and come highly recomended?? Let us know how you like it.. OR don't like it.. I know it won't be long and you'll have some stories to tell about some of those "students" !
