inspecting my truck
Question:
next week i will be assigned a company truck . iam seeking any advice on what to inspect and test other then the basic pre trip inspection to insure that i have a road worthy truck. my assigned truck will be either a freightliner coulumbia or a volvo 670.

Answer:
It's a company truck. Don't mess with it too much. Check brake slack, oil, washer fluid, etc.
Most likely the slack adjusters are automatic. DO NOT muck with them if they are out of adjustment. They will go one of two ways, and must be replaced. The most important check is the person staring back at you in the mirror.
Answer:
Check EVERYTHING you can before excepting the truck , make a checklist start with your PRETRIP then get into detail.
Oil leaks
Antifreeze leaks
Rims
Tires
Lights * Each and EVERY LIGHT , under all sequences of Operation *
Horns * Air and Electric *
Condition of body , note any damage however slight
Exhaust for signs of leaks
Engine brake
5Th wheel , if its slideable make sure the locks release and its been lubricated
Grab handles
Steps
Fuel tanks , straps
Take a look at the batteries, turn everything ELECTRICAL on for a few minutes check the voltmeter if theres a big DROP likely they are weak , start the truck a nd see if its charging around 14 VOLTS
Make sure all the door locks work and that you have the correct KEYS for everything
Windows
Mirrors
Interior , cleanliness , damage
Seats
radio
C B if they provide 1
interior lights
all the switches
A/C
Heater
Check that the paperwork , insurance , ownership , permits are correct and current
Check what ever tools are supplied with the truck , list them and the condition they are in
Answer:
Check that the paperwork, insurance, ownership, permits are correct and current.
If you do a thorough pre-trip, the mechanical should be covered. While the truck is in the shop having the mechanical discrepancies cleared, you'll probably spend more time cleaning up the admin side of the house going through the "book" for the truck. Hopefully, the company shop will have an admin checklist to ensure you're good to go as far as the bolded at the top plus cab cards for AZ and NM. And don't forget to check every trailer you pick up to ensure registration is current too. Don't move off the yard until you're sure everything is okey doke. It's my experience not much time or training is spent making sure drivers know how to check the admin side of the job. BOL

Answer:

Answer:

I would have took the Volvo.
Answer:
This time of year if you gonna run in North part of the country or Canada make sure you got anti-gel additive for diesel fuels.
Answer:
Good advice above. Check everything and take notes. Especially note any damage in or out and give a copy to your DM.

Answer:
As well as all the above noted info if possible Dip the FUEL tanks and check against FUEL GAUGE , if you can talk with the previous driver assigned to the truck it helps to find out any QUIRKS it might have.

Answer:
I agree with eveything so far but here are a few more. Look at the brake chambers. If any are hanging lower than the rest, possible blown brake chamber, bring that to the attention of maintenance immediately.
.
When you check the lights, check the turn signals individually not just turning on the four way flashers. Check that the four way flashers turn all the turn signal lights on. Finally, see that you have lights on at the rear of the vehicle with turn signal and four way flasher off.
.
Do a full and complete by the book air brake check. You are checking for air leaks with the engine off and both no brakes applied and brakes applied. When you pump the brakes down with the engine off and the ignition key on, apply the service brakes using the brake pedal and press fully and hold for a couple of seconds and repeat until the the low air pressure warning device goes on. You want both the buzzer and the light to work. If neither one works, it is an automatic truck out of service until it is fixed. If the brakes are adjusted and the slack adjusters work, the slack adjusters will adjust if necessary. If you just quickly fan the brakes and do not hold the brakes on for a couple of seconds, the slack adjusters do not adjust.
.
All of what I just posted is something you probably already know. Maybe it will help someone else that is unfamiliar with it. When checking the truck, I use the following philosophy --- If I think there is a problem with the truck, then there is a problem with the truck until proven otherwise.
If you have a question, it is always better to ask a mechanic then have a serious problem on the road. Be safe.

Answer:
Check the condensate drain lines from the A/C , this is a major cause of the MUSTY / MOULDY smell in most trucks , also a good idea is to shutoff A/C a few minutes early and let the coil dry off before shutting the truck down
To kill the GERMS sittong around in the A/C spray some JAVEX into the A/C air intake with the fan on then let and let it sit for a bit startup the A/C and condensate will wash it off the coil , can also get a commercial type cleaner that does this as well.
Cleaning the interior with a good cleaner and HOT WATER and scrubbing it will do a better job than just squirting FEBREEZE
