Roehl and H.O.Wolding a little info to share....
Question:
Well, I have been torn between these two companies. I am hoping that, just by chance, I get a company that will not only get me my first years required experience, but maybe I might like them enough for a more extended tour. That has led me to these two companies.
What I know of Roehl so far, I like, but I have e-mailed the N.E. Recruiter and phoned him and left a message. . .no response. Do they already have all the drivers they need?
H.O. Wolding. Smaller company that will take students. They have roughly 300 trucks, so they aren't a Giant company. They haul Nationwide, but mostly east of the Mississippi. They have a strong presence in New England, and run regularly into Maine (my home state). I chatted with a recruiter and this is what I have put together:
First year pay has changed since 7-00
0-6mo was .285 Now .27
6-12mo was .295 Now .285
No changes after 12 months
1 yr .305
2 yr .31
3 yr.315
so on and so on. . .
12 years .34
Short haul premium (per loaded mile) .03 for <250 miles, and segments of switched or dropped loads that are <250 miles and are PRE Approved by dispatch. (is that a loop hole? That looked like a loop hole.)
Does not apply to multi-pick-up or drop loads whose total trip exceeds 250 miles.
Semi annual perf. Bonus
55,001 - 60,000 = .01
60,001 - 65,000 = .015
65,001 -_______ = .045
Loading/Unloading
'53 FJ/GPT (?) Only $80.00
Insulation (floor) $30.00
Breakdown Skid load $26.00
Additional Drops $10.00
Layovers
after 24 hours $50
48 hours $100
adl. 24 hours $100
Metr NYC $75
Vacation Pay:
1 week after 1 year
2 weeks after 4 years
3 weeks after 15 years
Tuition Reimbursement starts 1 month after you start in your assigned truck (after approx. 4 weeks training) and is presently paid at a rate of $200/mo.
Home time:
Drivers are typically out 5-7 days sometimes 7-10 days and get 1.5 to 2 days off!
Idling policy: Yes, depends on which month.
It is 91 degrees today and this is June and this is MAINE!
Trailers: Mostly Dry Van, no Flats.
Lumpers paid: Maybe sometimes usually kinda sorta, it depends.
Driver unload? Been known to happen.
Mostly haul paper products and paper waste/recycling.
And now you know. . . . . The rest of the story, Good day?!?

Answer:
Have you gotten info packets from both companies? I have a sheet from Roehl and it doesn't look like they hire in Maine. It shows the cluster of the little northeast states in stripes which means experienced drivers only. (NH,MASS,VT,CT)

Answer:
Just got off the phone with Roehl, he said they do hire in Maine. So, that is where my priority is.

Answer:
They must have changed the driver hiring area. Good luck in whichever one you choose.

Answer:
Looking at H.O.'s site they say 95% no-touch and 80% drop and hook
I'll bet you dollars to doughnuts Roehl can't match that. (I looked on Roehls' site and could not find that info.)
H.O. dose'nt sound to bad---are you just partial to Roehl because of their size or what?
From what I can see---between the two, I would choose Wolding.

No, I just like Red trucks more than blue
Seriously though, H.O. and Roehl are Neck and Neck. I have considered the payscale of both though and have to say, Roehl jumps ahead with minimal longevity. With Wolding, I would be in my home area alot, but I would also like to flatbed and I would like the higher pay. Not being able to go west of the Rockies my first year with Roehl kinda' stinks but I have spent many years in the West and Northwest, and can understand why they may not want to send someone inexperienced down 12 miles of 7% grade or worse (much worse ) when it isn't necessary. I'm just having a hard time deciding. I need to go over to Poland Springs Water, they get alot of Wolding trucks there, and it is only 20 minutes away.
Tough Decision. But good input. Thanks

Sounds like home time will be absolutely no problem at all with Wolding.
If this is important to you (as it is to me) I see no comparison.
Add in the extras they offer:
Short haul premium (per loaded mile) .03 for <250 miles, and segments of switched or dropped loads that are <250 miles and are PRE Approved by dispatch.
and
Semi annual perf. Bonus

And I really don't see what your issue is with pay.
I understand you want to "see as much of the Country" as you can. (at least this is what it sounds like)---but belive me; after you've seen it all...................you'll want to be home more often.
Looking at Roehls' "domicile" map, you will see (or at least get the idea) that you will be under load during home time, and can therefore be "rushed" to get going again.
I say this because the whole state of Maine is shaded, yet the very bottom is striped and shaded for van/flat. The shaded area of the rest of the state means they only deliver there.
I'm not affiliated with Wolding, just pointing out to you what I would be looking at based on years of experience and knowing what I need from this job first---quality home time over rules a couple of pennies on base pay every time with me.
Good luck driver.

Answer:
Sounds like I need to ask these questions of Roehl. Maybe IBStrollin would have some input. I live 15 minutes from the Maine, NewHampshire boarder at and just on the edge of the shaded area. Home under a load would not be good at all. These are very good points and I am glad you took the time to point them out Driver. Thanks.

I would'nt worry too much about this.
I have found, when a company has a 'short haul' premium policy, they are pretty good at paying it. (though they may need reminding from time to time)
Dispatch can go like this:
Dispatcher: 1 Iron, I need you to swap out with #1234 at the Pilot in Nowheresville around 5:15 tonight and take his load to Nowheresburg---he's got a doctors appointment.
1 Iron: Nowheresburg? O.k., thats about 175 miles right?
Dispatcher: Actually it iiiisssss, 169.
1 Iron: Cool! Short Haul premium! I'm on my way now. What do you have for me after I deliver that?
Dispatcher: (chances are they usually say) We'll find something. Just get on over there and give me a call. (and of course they will be gone and the next shmoe will have to deal with it, yadda, yadda, yadda).
But they will have been reminded that your segmant of this load comes with the premium.
And then there is always the check stub----all check stubs have miles (if your paid by mile) on them for each trip. If the premium is not noted next to the miles, bring it to payrolls attention.

Answer:
The time I have come home under a load are few and far between - maybe because I park at a terminal. The times I have, it's set up as a delivery the next morning and usually with an hour or the terminal, 1.5 from the house. The times I have done this, I might as well stay out for the day, so I'll shuttle loads for the day from Green Bay to Milwaukee to Green Bay(4 hrs)
and finish with a pick-up and a drop in the Kaukauna yd. This help Roehl set up loads for other drivers, I'll still make some money, am home by a decent hour. But if it's a day the wife has off - all bets are off. Delivery the original to Green Bay and dead head me home! But even then I may still run the rest of the day. I know MY plan first thing that morning. I relay to my DM and he works with me. There have been times I haved been parked by noon Friday and don't come out until later Tuesday.
All the time, keep your DM in your personel loop.

Drive on! bandit58....

That's what I figured
Thanks for the quick response. I searched it late last night and Stevens doesn't look good at all. I'd rather drive for Werner than Stevens.
