I've got "Gas"
Question:
This is a new adventure for me, i've hauled reefer freight, dry freight, food grade tanker freight, now i've moved on to "hauling gas". I think this will be the most adventurous to date since there are so many regulations, proper loading procedures, transportation and delivery of, all of these things. I now have a greater respect for gas haulers, any of you long time gas haulers have any practical advice (other than dont turn tank over or lite a match) the hardest thing so far is the loading procedures at the different companies, there is no standard loading procedure, every terminal is different, one wants you to wear hard hat, glasses, back brace, walk around truck do cartwheels etc etc etc, other one doesnt care if you are wearing clothes. Once again, this should be interesting, at least im learning different aspects of this job....once again, any advice is appreciated

Answer:
Dont load with your head up your rear! One day after a funeral I was driving for Cenex Express loading my 45' tanker at the refinery and wasn't paying attention. Next thing you know fuel is spilling all down the sides. Luckily no one was around to catch this. Good Luck. Is the OTR or local? I've been thinking about doing the gas station delivery gig driving the 105k trucks out here in the NW.

Answer:
Don't know how you overflowed it over the sides, was the scully overflow at the rack not working?? or were you top loading?? Anyhow, the hardest part is the different ways the meters are set up. Danload, acculoads etc... but it si a great gig, I love hauling the heavey"black" oils the best. No alocation problems.
Answer:

Answer:
Congrats on the new gig, Bob.
Sorry, I didn't get to see you while I was in your neck of the woods.
I've been meaning to call you, but by the time I get around to it , it's always too late.

Answer:
I'm a gas hauler up in Canada here and I like the job. I haul out of Esso and Chevron. Each place has their own thing that they want you to do. Esso has different meters than Chevron. Chevon has meters that are set up by a computer and what not. The pay is great too. Probably the best paying job in the industries. I know the Chevron drivers make around 28 per hour where as I'm paid by the trip and can make anywhere from 23-26 bucks an hour depending on the trip pay and how fast it gets done. Anyways, you have a good gig if you're hauling fuel. Good luck!

Answer:
they dont pay by the hour here, it is by the load, the only way you can get paid by the hour is too work for chevron or motiva (shell) or bp/amoco, and too do that you need at least 3 years exp, so i am stuck feeling like a local otr trucker, load pay, albeit you do get paid for everything..diversions, stop offs, extra hoses, drawing maps, whatever you do get dinked and donked here, 5 bucks here, 15 there so forth and so on. the pay to date has been pretty good, i am bringing home on average 775.00 a week after taxes for a 5 day week which isnt bad. There is just so much to learn, not really about loading anymore, its just all the "little" things, like which station has messed up tanks (which they refuse to fix ie: they cut off before 90% ullage which is always nice, since you think it'll fit, then the little valve shuts on ya and your stuck with a hose full of gas or diesel and uh-oh, what do you do...the ones that are a pain in the butt to get into,no matter what time of day (mostly all of those are texaco stations..i will never buy gas at texaco again)..old, small and outdated, no veeder-roots and all run by people who you have a hard time conversing with because of lack of english skills..no fun too get a bizarre look when you ask for something as simple as a tank chart...this baptism under fire i guess is standard operating procedures...trying to figure out which is the best...i personally have been doing motiva dedicated (shell) as much as i can, u can check the tanks out right at the loading bay so you know that it will fit once you get to station with no problems, makes the day go by faster. Although i am figuring this all out fine, i cant see me doing this for the next 20 years, it is ok now because it is winter, but i am already thinking about summertime when it rains every day, having to be out there getting soaked, trying to stick the tanks in the rain,,,nah, i dont think so, but for the next few months its fine. Don't think i will be going back on the road anytime soon, i enjoy being at home, i just wish the bus thing had come through but it didn't so back to the drawing board, this is fine for now, but not forever.
