Money
Question:
I have heard many rumors and hearsay crap but is it absolutely true that some truckers I assume owner operators can bring in a six figure salary? -->

Answer:
Sure. Most O/O's clear $4,000 to $6,000 a week after expenses, working an average 30-40 hours or so. The vast majority of them only work about 20 weeks a year; They don't need the money, that's why there is such a demand for drivers; because the money's so good everybody goofs off all the time and retires after 4 or 5 years.

Answer:
That is the gross for the truck. Most Owner Operators net (paycheck) less than a company driver in the paycheck and work a lot harder to make it with the stress of all the administrative and tax headaches.
You have a hard time finding the truth in this business.

Answer:
If you figure 2500 miles per week for 51 weeks per year you get 127,500 miles per year.
At 82 cpm (which seems to be about average for O/O leased to a company) you get a yearly gross of 104,550.
Now out of that money the O/O is making truck payments, buying all the fuel, insurance payments, maintence and repair costs, etc. While operating costs vary a great deal from O/O to O/O many have anywhere from a 50-60 cpm operating cost and some a lot higher depending on truck payment, fuel ecomomy, fuel price, etc.
So if you figure a 55 cpm operating cost that leaves you grossing 27 cpm out of which you are going to be paying taxes.
I will always be a mutter trucker at heart.

with their own authority and accounts will make more than the .83cpm.
Although you'll have some trucknetters say there is no manoy in trucking there are O/O out there that are doing very well. It takes a lot of hard work and luck.
They aren't often found on trucknet...too busy driving!

You were talking net profit of .83cpm?
Some O/O's that do speciality type work with they're own authority can gross an average over $1.50 to $1.80 per mile and run less than 100,000 miles per year!

Answer:
Some O/O can and do make more, a lot more than the 82 or 83 cpm that are offered at a lot of companies.
I just used the 82 cpm figure since it is what most van and reefer companies pay thier O/O's, which with the proce of trucks, insurance, fuel, and maintence expences isnt jack.
I will always be a mutter trucker at heart.

my dad has been in the trucking industry for thirty years and his dad was a trucker for over forty. he has his own truck and is his own company and he has a broker. After expenses he nets about 50K to 60K a year. I think for someone who has been in trucking for thirty years this is really low not to mention he has to buy his own medical and life insurance etc. The only good thing about it is he can pick his own loads and doesn't have to rush to make appointments he pretty much comes and goes as he pleases.

That some O/O's with they're own authority run half the miles and do not have to work as hard as the top paid company drivers making the same 50k to 60k a year!!!
Plus there are alot of tax benefits of owning your own business, but that is for another forum!!!

Answer:
this is true he doesn't go through half the stress either and there are tax benefits but he doesn't have medical, dental, 401K none of that so it depends on what you want i guess.

Have him check into Blue Advantage by Blue Cross & Blue Shield for around $350 to $500 per month you can get real good coverage for 2 people!
401K does not matter, he can get Simple IRA for he and his wife each can invest up to $7,500 this year along with a Roth IRA which can also add up to $7,500 each depending on they're age!!
Depends on how he has the business set up to how he can invest, which I go through Fidelity Investments!
There is also Annuities that can be purchased with any extra funds, but do your homework on these because they are not for everyone and you can lose money on these even during a hot stock market!!!
I hope this information will help out!

Gross income yes. Net income is a fraction of that. Most of that six figure income goes right back into the truck.
It's not what you make, it's what you keep.

I've owned a few trucks and even running as an independant with my own customers, I've never netted six figures in a year.
I have done OK, though. Maybe I could have done better if I worked a bit harder at it, but I don't like to push myself that hard anymore. I refuse to take the impossible deliveies anymore. It's just not worth it.
