Truck Leasing
Question:
Ok... If I were to lease a truck. (btw ENGLAND is still worthless). I would be making payments on that truck. Technically that truck would be "mine" for the term of the lease right?
What stops me then from going out and finding "real" frieght to haul instead of waiting for my pittance from (Insert company name here)
Has anyone had experience doing this?
Thanks in advance... and NO I didn't sign a lease, I'm just looking for a way to fire my Dispatcher since I am stuck with my current employer until I get at least 6 months in it seems.
Answer:

It depends upon the lease agreement. My guess is that you wouldn't be able to do it, and you would still be overpaying for the truck.

Here's an idea - save up for a down payment on a truck from a REAL dealer.

Answer:
Best bet is as Rev said, save the money and buy the truck through good old fashioned conventional financing methods.
As for leasing, if you lease from a truck leasing company, ala Ryder or Penske, then yes, you can go wherever you want to go and haul whatever you want to haul with it. But if you are leasing from a company that moves freight and has their name on the door, then almost guaranteed that in the contract is the provision that the truck only hauls for them, on their loads, at their set rates. The have been a few small companies that allow you to set up backhauls (oops, return loads) and split the income with them, but they are very few and far between.
I assume from your statement about 6 months more that you are in your first year of driving and considering going out on your own?As long as the paperwork's clean, you boys can do whatever you want to out on the road" Mad Max ...1979

Answer:

As long as their name is on the title, it is their truck, regardless of what their recruiter might tell you.

Answer:

Ryder or Penske do not lease Class 8 trucks to "individuals".

I know, but I needed an example to make a point. As long as the paperwork's clean, you boys can do whatever you want to out on the road" Mad Max ...1979

Answer:
Yes, I am new. No I am not going out on my own after 6 months though. Basically. I have been trying to find a company to drive for other than England, but everyone I talk to wants to put me back in training with less than 6 months experience.
So I am doing time in a big red prison for the next six months and looking for anything I can do to change my situation.
My problem is that as a team for CR ENGLAND... A TEAM remember. we are being dispatched at 3500 - 4000 miles / week.
Never had a claim, never had a late load, never had a log violation... or anything of the like. Asked for a new dispatcher and got turned down cold... Since then it's been worse than it was before. Basically if you work for CR ENGLAND and you decide not to buy into their LEASE B.S. they put the screws to you until you cave in.
Like I said, I'm just trying to find a way to get through the next 6 months... (Down to 3.5 actually) until I am able to find another company to try out. I know that a lot of companies are going to be pretty similar to this... but I haven't found any that have a worse rep than ENGLAND. These guys are a bunch of fkn thieves.
At the same time I have a family back home that would like to eat once in a while, so I keep plugging away making my $400/wk with (edited) (edited) ENGLAND and begging my dispatcher for more miles. I've had 8.... 34 hour restarts in the last 3 weeks... basically we get dispatched for 1300 - 1600 miles... deliver early, then get another load leaving 12 - 18 hours after the original delivery time... basically the earlier we deliver the longer we sit after the trip...
I know everyone here knows better than to deal with CR ENGLAND already, but for those coming in looking for a company to start with... don't do it. CR ENGLAND will make you regret coming to work for them... Unless you are willing to sign your life away on a lease.
Answer:

I knew you knew. I feared some sort of Newbie frenzy if they didn't.
Answer:
Your fighting a loosing proposition and your not making sense. Since your only making $400. a week at England what would you loose training at another company. Some training companies will pay you the same while your in training for the next 2-3 weeks. Then you might have a chance to make more money. I see it as a very simple choice. Either stay where your at another 3.5 months and watch things (money) get worse or take the same money for a very short period some where else and have an opportunity to make more.
Hopefully you don't have the mentality that leasing from some company makes you an Owner Operator/Independant because it doesn't. Never has and never will. They own the truck and control your income. Seems you found that out at England. It isn't any different anywhere else.
I'm also curious, did you read the contract before signing it. If you did then you would already know the answer to your question. That truck isn't going anywhere else for freight. My guess is you didn't read what you signed. Thats a problem when newbies have stars planted firmly in their eyes by recruiters.

Answer:
Stuffs,
Fortunately I've been smart enough not to sign anything as mentioned above.. I'm just trying to find somewhere I can work that I might be a "little" better off than I am now. I understand that I'm not going to find a magical company that lets me do anything I want as a newbie. As much as anything I am trying to warn others away from ENGLAND.
As for the other part... I don't understand the difference between leasing a truck and being an O/O, which is why I am asking questions. I'm not going to lease a truck yet because I don't know enough about the business. I am trying to learn though... that's why I'm here.
Either way though, thanks for your input... every little bit helps me learn a little more.
Answer:

It's the same as leasing or buying a car. In one scenario, you own it, and the other, you don't.
Go to your local Rent-A-Center. That is how a Lease Purchase works.

Answer:
I know just what everyone wants to hear, more chearleading. You might want to check out the baby blue company to your northwest corner. I can't say for sure but I think money is the same during training ( I know it sucks to go back to training) however Stuffs actually makes a good point. If you can't figure out the company I am talking about just check the roundtable for a thread called Finally a company that gives a crap. They are building a new terminal in Salt Lake and mainly run the 17 western, some specialized fleets also. That is all I will say for now as I expect the Pirahna's to be nipping on my heels. By the way you sound like a quality driver that deserves more and that's why I'm recommending these guy's.

Answer:
He means Gordon Trucking Company. www.teamgti.com
My gosh, have they got you so terrified you're afraid to speak their name? Or is it Lord Voldemort Trucking Company. As long as the paperwork's clean, you boys can do whatever you want to out on the road" Mad Max ...1979

Answer:
Technically that truck would be "mine" for the term of the lease right?
======================================================
Wrong!
That truck is not "yours" unless your name is on the Title of that truck.
When your name is on the Title of that truck then it's "yours" ...not until then.
