Has anyone had experience with these schools?
Question:
Has anyone been through the truck driving school in Lumberton NC called "Lumberton Truck Driving Academy"? or "Future Truckers Of America" in Asheboro NC? I am considering both of these, the one in Lumberton is close enough for me to drive back and forth each day from home and would save on out of pocket expenses. I have looked at other Company sponsored schools, but I am leaning more toward paying for my own school and then seeking a job.
Thanks for any info,
Danny

Answer:
If U pay for it yourself out of the pocket, U still will be limited on the companies
U work for because still only certain companies hired inexperienced drivers.
Your (Swifts, Usa Truck, Schneider, and so on). U live in NC call Schneider or
www.schneider.com . I went to school 6 years ago out the pocket and it was
the same results. I eventually drove for Schneider for a year and a half for exp
purposes. Now schneider has schools at all they're terminals and it wouldn't
cost U a thing plus you'll get the necessary exp U need. They have a school
out of the Charlotte terminal which is very decent. check that out and leave your
options open.DONNY SCHNEIDER TOLD ME THAT.

You may wish to research before stating "beliefs" as "facts".
There are Carriers, including Union LTL , that hire Graduates as compared to experienced only.

Hey Mikey that's exactly what I said. Drop the CHALUPA and get some rest.

I see the confusion on your part, let me rephrase the last sentence...
There are Carriers, including Union LTL, that hire Driving School Graduates without the practical experience of experience.
Answer:
If your going to go the private school route then go to a PTDI certified school. Many of the better companies ( ) require it.

Sounds like another lame reply from you.
Answer:
RNB...you are talking out of both sides of your mouth. You tell him that if he pays for his own school that he is limited by who will hire him and to leave his options "open." But then tell him that he will be better off getiing into a company sponsored training program, most of which make you sign a contract or will be held financially liable if you don't hold up your end of the contract. How is that leaving his options open??
Danny, completely disregard what RNB said...you will be much better off paying for your own school, doing your research and hiring on with a decent company instead of one that you have to suffer through just to "get your experience." Hire on with a company that is not going to own you for a year.

Answer:
Danny disregard what RABELAM's Girlfriend BUNKER069 is saying Why go
pay a school $4500 for 6-12 weeks of schooling, Then U still have to look for
a job? When U can PIMP a company sponsored training,go straight to work,
and no cost to U. When I paid for my schooling out the pocket a 7 years ago.
There wasn't that much company sponsored training, or that's what I would've
did. But what's a few thousand to RNB? No matter who U drive for your first
6months to a year anyway it's all the same. No reward no struggle. And bump
what those losers are talking about Danny. If it don't make $$$ it don't make
sense

Answer:
RNB not every school is $4500. I have told you before that I paid a little over 300 bucks for a 12 week program at a community college. Your response to that was why do in 12 weeks what you can do in 4...? Well the answer is...get more training.
Why commit yourself to a crappy training company for a year when you dont have to? What is a crappy training company going to start you out at? As little as .24 and up to what ...28cpm, yup that is sure making the $$$ as you say.
Danny go to a PTDI certified school and you will be able to sign on with a decent outfit with a much better chance of making some decent money.
Do your homework Danny and you will be fine.

Answer:
Danny, welcome to the TruckNet Drivers Roundtable forums.
TruckNet also has a page on education, which includes CDL School links (PTDI):
CDL Schools by state
Schools with Certified Courses
By and large, once you finish your training and are hired on with a training company, stick with it for one full year. Getting that year of driving under your belt is key to the rest of your driving career. After that you should have too much of a problem picking your carrier of choice to drive for with your experience and clean MVR.
Once you have narrowed down your choice of CDL schools, come back here and see what other have to say about their experiences with those companies. Same thing goes when you have that year of experience under your belt. See what others have to say about your carrier choices.
Best of luck to you in your new vocation.

Answer:
Thanks for the replies. I've been doing some checking and what I've found is that if I go with a company paid course where the co pays for the training I will be locked in to that company for at least 12 months(most co's) and most of the companys take a certain amount out of your check each pay period to pay for at least part of the schooling, and if you decide that the company is treating you like crap and you leave before the 12 months you have to pay them the total cost of the schooling, some are as much as 6 grand. If I decide to pay for the school myself there are a lot of companys who have tuition reimbursement plans where they pay you a certain amount "extra" to pay you back for the training, and if I feel like I am getting treated like crap I can move on to another company without having to pay the company anything. From what I have found by looking at both ways, when you complete your CDL training and start driving for a company you will have to go out with a trainer for 5-8 weeks. Both ways are about the same amount of time 3-4 weeks schooling for CDL's and 5-8 weeks with a company trainer.
My fear of getting a company to sponsor me for school and then being obligated to them for one year is just that, being obligated to the company for one year means that they know they have you over a barrel so to speak and they can treat you any way they want to because if you leave in most cases you will owe them a lot more money than most schools charge you out of pocket to attend.
My way of looking at paying for the school myself is if I decide to leave a company because of how I am treated I won't owe anyone anything. I'm not talking about getting loans to pay for school, I'll be paying cash and once its paid there is no one to pay back, and there are some companys who will pay you back for your school expenses up to $6000.
I hav'nt totally made up my mind to give trucking a try, but I am begining to think that if I do, paying for the school myself is the way to go.

Answer:
Also, getting back to my original question, which somehow got turned into how to pay for CDL training, has anyone had any experience with Future Truckers of America in Asheboro, NC or Lumberton Truck Driving Academy in Lumberton, NC??? The Asheboro school will cost a little more but I am concerned with which school has the better training.
Thanks,
Danny

Answer:

That is the best route to take for you and anyone else that can.
If you're flat out "broke" Carrier indentured servitude is the only option.
Contrary to what you've been told there are Carriers the hire inexperienced
Graduate Drivers. Roadway,Yellow ,Old Dominion being three will hire with absolutely no experience other than "school" and a stable work history.
Working a year at one of the mega training carriers for experience is history.
