averted an accident.....
Question:
last week i was leaving a parking lot, pulled up to the edge of the parking lot/street to make right turn onto the street and looked left. i didn't see anyone so i proceded to make my right hand turn onto the street when a car comes zipping by. i appears that he was blocked by my mirror when i took a look to the left to see if it was all clear.

Answer:
I've done that -- we all have. That's why it's taught to look left and right at least twice.

Answer:
LEFT-RIGHT-LEFT.
Never assume that looking left ONCE is enough. By the time you have looked right, there is plenty of time for something to come into sight that you missed the first time.
My sister totalled a car like this many years back. Exact same scenario.

Answer:
I usually glance quickly again -- maybe a fourth time -- and then glance at my convex as soon as it catches what's behind me to make sure something hasn't appeared in the meantime.
These things need to become habits, so you'll do them automatically regardless of how safe the situation seems. It's usually the odd situation that'll catch you when you least expect it -- like someone behind your mirror, or speeding out behind a parked vehicle, etc....

Answer:
And never trust anyone with their turn signal 'on"
I've seen too many people with the turn signals "on" and decide not to make the turn.

Answer:
And never trust anyone with their turn signal turned off either!

Answer:

That's an understatement..............I NEVER believe anyone is turning just because their blinker is on.
Day before yesterday, I was driving on I-295 in Jacksonville...........when up comes a "FOOL" on a "Donor Wagon" (motorcycle)...............traffic was real heavy and he pulled into my lane immediately after he passed me,.......... I missed him, I swear by no less than 1-inch.................had I not anticipated what he was going to do by his eratic driving as seen from my mirrors.............he would be dead now................he has no idea how close he came to dying that day.
As far as blinkers, I have to always remember to turn mine off.............they do not go off automatically in my truck...........I hate that.
