UPS
Question:
Anybody got anything to say about UPS? Answer: Hmmm...beats being unemployed. Be prepared to work for a living. Be prepared for micro management conditions. Be prepared for working under a Union Contract. Be prepared to cash a decent paycheck. Be prepared for a somewhat normal lifestyle at home. Be prepared for not being acceptable or hired by UPS as a Newbie. Answer: Except as a casual for dock work and local delivery if there's an opening. Answer: Wasn't there a big union strike some years ago to eliminate the "casual" work and temp positions? Answer: Right now I am looking at an add for UPS that says they are looking for students, solos, and teams. I also have a relative in high places. They want flat bed drivers. Answer: It apperently is the "new" UPS Freight Division as compared to parcel. Your relative worked for Overnite? Answer: As far as I know and they may have another name for them, several of the day delivery guys (little brown truks) I know or have known were only casual on call drivers/dock workers. Most were hoping to be full time in the future. I'm curious what the Overnight takeover will do to their hiring. If they'll be looking for drivers like Overnight did or if they'll get a steady driver base like UPS? Answer: I'm curious on how they're going to handle the IBT. http://www.teamster.org/resources/upsfreight/upsfreight.asp Answer: Looks like they stand to gain 15000 new members if it works out. Since it's a new division of UPS their going to have to get the drivers to vote on it. If the drivers are smart they will vote yes. Answer: Here in SoCal they start you loading trucks @ 4am-8am. 11 YEAR wait to get on full time! Then another 8-10 to get in the small trucks. After 8 yrs of small trucks you are elegible to drive the big trucks if they have an opening. Which they don't. Answer: I've heard that "story" for years,I don't believe it covers the facts of employment at UPS. I believe the "story" covers an option concerning becoming a Driver. There's no requirement to work the Dock or start as a Package Car Driver. They do hire experienced TT Drivers from the outside frequently. The "math" in the story don't add up in reality. By the time you hit the TT you'ld be ready for retirement. Answer: Well they might in 20 years. Show a little optimism would ya, this is a happy forum. Answer: This ain't the Happy Forum, that's over yonder. This is Fantasy Island the land of enchantment and fiction. I would think there's a truth in trucking land somewhere.
