Oversize permit routing?
Question:
Is there a way to enter permit routing data into PCMiler or another software package to show the actual miles?
We (a broker) move alot of overwidth loads and we pay the truck based on actual permitted route miles instead of practical. I'd like to be able to enter these routes into something and push a button and get a mileage/route result.
Thanks in advance.

Answer:
I like Yahoo's beta map. It is slow to load, and does better in broadband areas.
You can enter several interim way points, and it will give you a total miles. I don't know how the miles compare to HHG, PC Miler or any of the others.

Answer:
When I worked for a mileage based carrier we were also paid on hub miles for O/S shipments. What we had to do to support out out of route miles was to list our starting city and the cities that we went through that were out of route. We also had to turn in our O/S permits(or copies of them) so that IF the payroll dept chose to they could check the routing with the cities that we had listed.
Maybe a bit of extra work...but it worked best for both parties involved.

Answer:
Have you looked into PC Miler's new v18? I'm not sure, but it may have OS routing. Its really improved over the old one....there are several different versions, and it even goes to "street and address level" if you want.
If not, I guess you'd have to do as the other poster suggested and plug in "stops" to "force" the route along the permitted route so you would end up with accurate mileage.
But you could also do that with MS Streets and Trips if you already have the permitted route....So I like what I do, you don't, too bad, get over it. Get on with your life, I am.

Answer:
Just take the permits an run the miles city to city on MS Street and
trips. There ain't no magic fix. You should know permit routes change day to day and by size. Why don't you pay the trucks on percentage and eliminate the problem?
