Former Driver starting over, any advice for the 2nd timer?
Question:
I drove for a little over 5 years then I got out of the truck and into an Associates Degree in Computer Science.
Let my CDL's go thinking it would no longer be needed and have come to the realization that I made a better living and enjoyed OTR much more than fixing computers for stuffed shirts... hahaha
Anyone have any advice regarding Company training or would I need to do a school to prove myself all over again?
I know the Logbooks have changed a little and I havent had any verifiable driving since 2000.
Thanks
Answer:
You will have to attend school, perhaps a refresher is all you will need to regain the CDL. A company will treat you as a newbie, so you will need to do the training thing with a driver-trainer.
But, it should be a snap since it is pretty much like riding a bike... there are some things you never forget, just get rusty at. Scrape the rust off and you are good to go.

Answer:
Last Chance, many drivers have left and returned to the industry. Paul56 is right on target. A refresher course would most likely be all that is needed to get you up and running again.

How to get your DAC/USIS report

Answer:
I drove for 12 years then got a degree in electronics and worked in high tech for 20 years doing quality control and engineering work. I used to have the old PA commercial license and when the CDL came around I thought I won't ever need that. Wrong! When I got flushed out, I took the full CDL course but the school I went to will work with you to give you exactly what you need to get back on the road.
I will pass on what Monty has been stressing for log books, see here. http://roundtable.truck.net/viiewt.php?t=57611

Thanks one and all for the information.
Guess its off to do some school checking in either Cinci or Indy (centrally located between them).
Answer:
I just came back to driving after hanging up the keys 16 years ago. I used my veterans benefits to go to a driving school and was hired right out of school by a good company. They also paid me for my previous miles, so keep that in mind when negotiating with a company.
Oh, by the way, I went to school at a community college. Four weeks/160 hrs, about 500 miles behind the wheel. This seemed to be what companies were looking for.
