Class 1 and moving to Canada
Question:
Hello, i'm new to all this, so please bear with me..... My girlfriend is Canadian, and i'm hoping to move to Canada with her in about a year and a half. I currently have no truckin experience or licence, i'm just looking into this..... My question is, can i transfer a Class 1 to Canada, or will i have to take they're version of it when i get out there? any answers or suggestions will be better than nothing.......thank you Answer: I suspect most provinces have similar rules, below are those for the province of Ontario in Canada: http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/dandv/visiting.htm "If you are a new resident in Ontario and have a valid driver's licence from another province, state or country, you can use it for up to 60 days after you move to Ontario. If you want to keep driving in Ontario, you must get an Ontario driver's licence." Follow that to the "Exchanging an Out-of-Country Licence" link. http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/dandv/driver/exchange.htm And take special note of the following: "This policy does not apply to drivers from the following jurisdictions: * Canadian provinces and territories; * Canadian Forces Europe; * U.S. States (with the exception of Arizona, District of Columbia, Illinois, New Jersey and Vermont); * Austria, Belgium, France, Great Britain, Germany, Japan, Korea, and Switzerland." I'd suggest you contact the appropriate provincial Ministry for the province where you plan to move to to determine exactly what the requirements regarding a CDL. Given the above information, it seems to me the process may be fairly simple and easy to comply with. I know moving from Ontario to Quebec I need to provide them with my most recent completed medical form, nothing more than that. A new Quebec licence was issued with more numbers and letters on it than I've ever seen. Answer: Cheers Paul, That's got one of many questions out the way !! i'm sure i'll be back with even more stupid enquiries....... thank you Answer: Where abouts are you moving from ? Answer: From UK to Ontario Sarnia, London or Guelph area........ain't decided yet. Answer: Try www.truckscan.ca and click on the "Canadian ambitions" forum. There are guy's on here who have gone over to Canada on the PNP scheme from the UK and know alot about transfering licences etc, althought unfortunately I think you will need to do the full Canadian CDL thing. Try also the Ex-pats forum at www.trucknetuk.com. Why when you say you have no trucking experience are you wanting to know about changing a UK class 1 HGV licence to a Canadian class A CDL ? Answer: Sorry, i'm going for my HGV Class 1 over here so i can get some experience, i don't wanna be in one of those catch 22 situations..... No experience, no job............that sort of thing sorry if it sounded a bit odd Answer: I'm thinking you might be relearning a great number of things once in Canada, including, but not limited to, which side of the road we drive on... which can affect a number of other issues with respect to your driving. In any case and licence issues aside, I suspect once in Canada a carrier will want you to be going out with a driver-trainer for a period of time. No, not on a date... in the truck. Answer: hi donut, i too am moving out to canada in about 10 weeks. i also have a class one license for about 12 years. You will need to take a seperate test as you HGV license is only valid for 90 days, another stumbling block you might encounter is experiance. The canadian companys i spoke to all wanted you to have 10 years experiance in the uk plus continental driving experiance as well. This is not a problem for me as i have both. any other questions you want in regards to a uk driver moving to canada i am sure i could help you with as i have done most of the work needed to get out there, good luck.See you all real soon.!!!!!! Answer: Since you are not going to Canada for a while why not go on a USA harvest run for 6 months and get your USA trucking class A CDL with ALL the extra's, it will count for alot with the Canadian trucking companies as you will have had some OTR experience.
