1) i don't think price per gallon is the problem; I think MPG is the problem. You'll spend more on food per week than on gas. You'll spend more for a gallon of milk than a gallon of gas.
a) Here is where the OTR driver is at an advantage over their local peers; The OTR driver does very little driving with their personal car.

Answer:
Another trick, and this may sound silly but if u think about it, it would probably work is if you drive a pickup, take the wheels and tires off of a medium duty truck such as an Izuzu NPR, chevy 3500 etc. and install them on your pickup.
These tires run at like 90-100psi so they have little rolling resistance as compared to the regular tires which run at like 30psi.
It will ride rough, but if you drive on highways mostly it won't make too much a difference.
Besides, think of all the money you'll save.
