Turnover Rate
Question:
What is a "good" percentage of turnover at a company? I ve heard 60%+ is NOT good, obviously, but with so many drivers job-hopping, I expect that there is some turnover, but how much is too much? -Thanks in advance for any and all replies.
Answer:
I would bet that any medium to large trucking company would LOVE to have a 60% turnover rate. Most of them run over 100%

Answer:
Industry wide, the rate is right at the 120% mark, which means that a 100 truck company needs to hire 120 drivers a year to cover their turnover rate. For some of the bigger companies that have reputations for abusing their drivers, rates above 150 aren't unheard of. Just try to imagine the efforts a company like Swift or JB Hunt goes through to cover that loss rate. They end up needing 500 drivers a week just to stay where they are.
Some companies do much better. Where I work, we are right in the 30% range, which means that with about 600 trucks on the road, we need to hire about 180 drivers a year to keep up. Not great, and many businesses couldn't handle the costs of hiring and recruiting on the level that trucking. But the hiring, training and replacement cycle just seems to be a part of trucking, and it's a hidden cost. If companies could keep drivers and not spend so much on hiring and training, they could probably add 5-7 cpm from the savings.

Answer:
I have worked for 2 large and one small company that had orientation classes and by my count the turnover is probably 200 to 300 percent.***Patience is the hardest thing to learn..

Answer:
Before I left lake City, Fl I talked with a company owner. This guy had no problem with drivers who have 7 or more jobs in a 10 year period. He considered it normal.
I didn't apply to his company because I didn't want another company added to my resume.

Answer:
Over here the latest figures are about 25%.

Answer:
when I was at SRT we were told it was 128%
my local company is 4%Live in St. Louis? Looking for concrete truck drivers....great pay and benifits...pm for details

Answer:
Swift was up around 115 percent give or take. Thats 18000 drivers through their revolving doors a year (giving them the benefit of the doubt, it's probably more).

Answer:

If they added that 5-7 in the first place they could reduce turnover.
Answer:

Mike, I do believe you're 100% correct!! If the companies were to quit wasting money advertising in tons of magazines, etc.... and use that money to pay drivers, and also clean up their acts....pay at least practical miles, or even better pay door to door hub miles, automatic detention at an hourly rate, etc....then their turnover rate would more than likely plummet.
Seems kind of stupid to continue to foster an environment where they throw good money at bad. Every time a driver quits, a company spends between $3500 and $5000 to replace the driver....seems if they got their acts together they could save a small fortune, pay drivers better and have more highly skilled drivers. So I like what I do, you don't, too bad, get over it. Get on with your life, I am.

Answer:
Millis' turnover was so high that they had 3 schools going to cover the need for drivers. 3x52 would be 156 IF they each produced only 1 driver a week, which is probably not too far off, their classes were only a max of 6. I believe that they have 700 trucks. A turnover of 50%+ would NOT be a surprise for them.
I know Bowman's turnover was pretty good from the big orientation class and the fact that of the 8 drivers I worked with 4 are already gone, including me.
The company I start with Monday has a 26% turnover rate, hopefully the #s will actually mean I'm going to the better carrier this time.
Why pay MORE for a GOOD driver when you can get a NEW driver for $10K less <-------- Yes this IS sarcasm
