Question:
Hi, My name is Taxminia0311 and I'm new to the site as well as to the Trucking community and my question I live in Ct, in the New Haven area and I was wondering if anyone know of a company in the local area that has CDL course besides New England Tractor Trailor School (NETTI)??? also has anyone ever heard of this comapany NEW ENGLAND MOTOR FREIGHT (NEMF) and their CDL program???? I spoke to a gentlemen about their program and he infrom me that they are willing to train me for my CDL and while I'm going the the CDL program I will be getting paid $ 12.00 per hr and also show me the rope but, after I have learn how to drive a tractor trailor I would have to sign a contract statement that I would have to commite myself to their company for 3 years and while I'm working for the company they will pay me 17.05 and hr local route meaning in the area but,at the same time they will deducte out of my weekly pay check for the 3 years that I commited to the company $25.00dollars after taxes for the training that they provided to me for earning my CDL throught their program and that when the 3 years are up the will reimburst me the entire $3,900 dollar in one sum lump the entire price of the trainning that was taken out of my pay check through out the entire 3 years. has anyone ever heard of any company doing this kind of CDL deal and if so has anyone in this Forum done this sort of deal??? Answer: 3 yrs is a longgggggggg time if you hate the job! If you leave early then you have to pay up pronto for CDL training. Got $4K laying around? Most OTR places only require ONE year sign on to make it worth training you. Local gig is nice, but the time span may be a real thorn? Make sure it's what you want to do. Maybe find some of their drivers and see what the job is like and how well the like it. Recruiters will sell you the bridge for a dollar and then hang you from it for a long time. Good luck Answer: Wowaa... three years is a long time to be committed to work for an outfit. Things change in that period of time... You may decide driving truck isn't for you. You may decide that company isn't for you. What do you do then? Suck it up and hang on for the remainder of your time? ...or leave and be saddled with payments? Give yourself as many options as possible... have your finances in order before going into trucking, pay for your own training and pick a reasonable company to start with based on recommendations from others here as to which companies are good for newbies. Answer: Three years is not a long time at all if you have a good job. It's just a drop in the bucket. If you have a lousy job it would be torture. Many OTR drivers jump jobs very often because the job sucks. A lot less LTL drivers job hop. The job is better. Home time, benefits, retirement is what keeps the LTL segment at the same job for years. Fluctuating income and lousy dispatch is what motivates the OTR drivers to continually move on. Here are soem past threads on NEMF. To me they look to be good and a solid foot in the door to LTL driving. Some thing that is hard to come by for most. http://roundtable.truck.net/viiewt.php?p=510703&highlight=nemf#510703 http://roundtable.truck.net/viiewt.php?p=501114&highlight=nemf#501114 http://roundtable.truck.net/search.php?mode=results Answer: 3yrs is a loooong time to be driving up and down 1-95 all day everyday. Is bad enough i have to go their even rarely. I cant imagine doing it every day. Check with nearby Trade schools and Tech colleges for CDL courses, also search the Web, youll find something else.
