Conway driver apprintace program
Question:
Is anyone framilier with this program offered by conway where they provide you with cdl training while working for them as a dock worker. does this sound good or bad. dont really want to get screwed into being dock worker and never get cdl. anyone have any experiance with this
thanks for any help

Answer:
No personnal experiance but Conway offers the same deal where I live. Good or bad, I see their ad on a regular basis. I can tell you that in conversing with a Conway recruiter at a job fair, I was told that I would be working my own freight at their docks doing linehaul.
Not quite my idea of linehaul. Oh', I worked the docks already. But that was after my P&D day was over.

Answer:
A couple of the LTL companies do this sort of thing. Soet of on the job training in driving. Advantages are that it's about as low cost a way of getting in as there is, and you have access to a truck to use for a driving test. negatives are that there isn't any specific date when you willl be a driver and get licensed, so you could just stay a dock worker for quite a while. But as far as a learning method goes, learning in a place where you will be doing lots of backing, hooking and unhooking isn't a bad place to start. Many darn good truck drivers learned under essentially the same conditions, on farms or other places. And you earn a decent wage while learning, so it's a possibility worth looking into.

Answer:
Do you want to live the "Over The Road Lifestyle" or do you want a career with a good future?
Conway is offering a career with plenty of benefits and an actual life you can live at home.
I've talked with Conway Southern Xp drivers on more than one occasion. It did not take them long to become a driver. But they also do dock work while they drive. Basically what you were told. They load their own truck and help with the others. I have not talked to one that was unhappy with the job.
To clarify, I use to run in an area where CSX delivered and talked with 4 drivers. Three of them trained to get their license at CSX and loved it. I would have taken the jib if I lived in the right area.
