CDL A Learner's Permit
Question:
Hello,
I'm about to go get my CDL A learner's permit (a lot of trucking school require to have the permit before starting), so my question is, should I study the entire book.. hazmat, double.. etc for just the permit? Or certain sections of the DMV CDL book? All I've heard so far is that I should study only section 1-3 and 5-6 for the learner's permit. What should I do? Thank you.

Answer:
Do just the basics that you need, or all if you want to add endorsements.
I took all the tests(it was free) so if you pass them...it's just added bonus.
I missed Hazmat by one question(and didn't even study it). Didn't want it anyway.

Answer:
There are more than a few net sites that have practice CDL test elements. Among others, layover.com/lounge, classdriver.com. BOL

Answer:
Cool, didn't really get the answer I was looking for though...
Should I study or not the following sections in order to get the CDL A Learner's Permit? Am I going to have questions from those? :
Transporting Passengers
Doubles and Triples
Tank Vehicles
Hazardous Materials
Thanks you

Answer:
To just get the basic permit with no endorsements you don;'t have to take either of the above. You only need to take the general knowledge and air brake test. Those are the main 2 you need to pass. IF you want to get the additional endorsements THAN you can take one or all of the above, except the one for transporting passengers unless you want to drive a bus. Actually getting the Haz-mat endorsement has gotten more complicated. IF you're not going to be hauling hazmat you won't need to study for or take the test anyway.
Same goes for taking the doubles, triples, and tanker tests. Those are just additional endorsements. They are not required for just getting a basic Cdl to drive an average tractor-trailer hauling general commodities. The main 2 tests are general knowledge and air brake,at least here in Tx. Hope this helps.Disclaimer:Pick too ugly to post at this time,LOL.

Answer:
Thanks Detroit 60... yeah that must be right, because the school didn't said that I need to take Hazardous Materials, Doubles and Triples.. etc endorsements, they just said I need the regular/basic CDL learners permit before joining class.
I'll most definitely get those endorsements down the road, after I get my actual CDL A license. But for what I need now, I think I know what should I study. Thanks.

Answer:

To get a Class A it's General Knowledge, Air Brakes, and Combination Vehicles. So yes, for the basic it's sections 1,2,3,5,6 from the CDL manual.

Answer:
I suggest that you study and take the doubles/triples and the tanker at least, as it will cost you MONEY and time later to do them Hazmat will also require a backgroud test and depending on what you plan to do may not be worth it. Some employers look to see that you have "all" your endorsments and it will provide more oportunities for employment Also it is usualy easier tht having to study for them later while in the study mode.... Just GET ER DONE

Alright.. I just got my CDL A learner's permit which is valid for 6 months. For the people that have to take their CDL A learner's permit also, learn sections 1-3, 5-6 from the book, and do not go there thinking that you have to take only one test (the general knowledge), because there are 3 individual exams (general knowledge 50 qstn's, air brakes 25 qstn's, and combination vehicles 20 qstn's) in order for you have this learner's permit.
Now my noob question is this:
If I go ahead and get the rest of the endorsements that interst me (Doubles and Triples, Tank Vehicles, Hazardous Materials), will I have to retake those after I graduate from the trucking school? I mean the only thing the school provides me is that they give me a full class A CDL upon completion (skill test waived for the DMV).
And plus do I have to retake everything I just passed today for my learners' permit?
Thanks you

Answer:
IF you take the doubles/triples,and tankers test and get the endorsements then you will only have to take the skills test after you graduate. Getting the haz-mat endorsement has gotten complicated. Im still not sure what you exactly have to do to get the haz-mat. I don't plan to renew mine after it expires.
Good Luck.Disclaimer:Pick too ugly to post at this time,LOL.

Answer:
Below are some links to help you out on the hazmat endorsement. Also just type it in a Google search for your state. I would do it as soon as possible. Some companies require it and the pay can be a little better.

I also took the pssr test the last time I went. That wayy all I need is the road test if I wanted to drive a bus.

Answer:
The endorsements are just that...add on's. Once you have passed your driving test, you'll have the endorsements. No other tests are required for.

Answer:
59Mack you'll have to explain that one. All endorsements require an additional test. Tanks, Doubles and especially Hazmat have their own test. They don't just come automaticaly.
Below is a link to a good online practice area for all test. Use the menu on the left.

Answer:
Take all your endorsement tests when you get the learners permit. Then, when you pass your final driving test, you'll have the endorsements. You can take them anytime, but might get them over first.
I'm talking tank, triples, Hazmat. You'll need the air and combo to get your "A" license. The other three are "add ons" for the most part and don't require any further "drive" testing to get added on. Meaning, you can go in , take the written tests, have them put on your license AFTER you have your CDL. Yes, Hazmat is quite complicated, but a simple written test is all that is required(besides backround check and what not).
