Antidepressant medications and trucking
Question:
I recently went through driving school and got my CDL. Today was the first day of my orientation. I was sent packing because I disclosed on my physical questionaire that I take an antidepressant medication. I was very surprised because I passed my physical for driving school/ CDL and I was on the same medication and I listed it on that questionaire. The antidepressant is not a controlled substance which could create a dependency. Also, I am pretty sure this was the actual reason (not an excuse) for booting me, because I am very clean cut and I showed up on time, etc. I asked if I could get a list of the prohibited meds, and the company manager basically told me that they do not allow any antidepressants. Can you guys shed some light on this for me? Do many companies refuse to hire a driver if he takes an antidepressant medication? Do you have any tips for dealing with this issue? Should I not have listed the medication on my questionaire? I doubt this is even tested in the drug screen, so I feel like I was penalized for being honest. Can you tell which companies have a similar policy regarding antidepressants and which companies are more accepting? I would really appreciate any information any of you could provide. Thank you. Answer: I have driven with antidepressants since 1998, including 4 1/2 years of hazmat tanker. It has been my experience that as long as there is a letter from the prescribing doctor stating that the drugs will not affect the safe operation of a commercial vehicle, it has been accepted. However, policy seems to vary from company to company, so be sure to ask. Also, if you carry prescription meds on the road with you, be sure they are in the original RX bottle I take Wellbutrin and have no side effects. P.S. IMHO I think it's always a good idea to be honest about what you're taking. It could come back on you in a lawsuit situation. This link will provide you a list of no-no drugs. http://www.pumpkindriver.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb...pic;f=23;t=000005 Copyright ? 2006 - 2007 www.thankhealth.com Privacy Policy
