Setting the patking brakes
Question:
I've been out with a trainer. Many things he does or tells me to do is different than what I've been told by others.
When we park he says not to leave the red knob out, just the yellow one, so the trailer brakes don't freeze in the stuck position. What's everyones opinion on this?
Sorry about the spelling, that's what happens when you type with 2 fingers.

Answer:
He is right, In very cold weather the brakes will freeze. If I'm parking for an extended period of time in cold weather, I only lock the tractor brakes.

Answer:
Simply setting the tractor brakes is fine--IF---YOUR BRAKES ARE IN EXCELLENT SHAPE AND THE UNIT IS ON FLAT GROUND.
Otherwise, set the tractor and trailer brakes. Trailor brakes will not freeze unless set up wet.
Dragging them slightly as you come thru the truckstop or whatever will usually dry them out.
Even if they do freeze, a few minutes beating on them beats the hell out of writing up a report trying to explain why your truck rolled down and hit something.

Answer:
Company safety man made it very clear that a rollaway, even with no damage, is grounds for immidiate termination.

Answer:
Wuzzy/Charlie is right. If you are still paranoid about rolling away with only the tractor brakes set, buy some wheel chocks and stick them under the trailer tires.
