Solo vs. Team - which is better?
Question:
All of the companies advertise more money for teams, and I'm doing trucking for the money! I know that it's difficult to find somebody you can get along with as a team driver, and I know from training that it's hard for me to sleep while the truck is bouncing down the road. Other than that, are there any downsides to team driving? How do you work out the driving/sleeping times? Do you get enough rest? Answer: Solo is the way to go 95% of the time. If it is your wife, team is good. Money gose to the same bank account. Dedicated run were you are home weekly and get real good miles. Like 6000+ a week. Then teaming with somone else is fine as well.202 N Main Street Summerfield Il 62289 TRUCK PARKING AVAILABLE! Answer: IMHO: Team driving only works for husband/wife, boyfriend/gf (or whaatever!) when the money is going into one household. The added money isn't enough to justify running team with someone who doesn't live with you. Both members of the team drive just as much as a solo driver would (If the company has that much TRUE team runs) but you are actually getting paid less than a solo driver. No, you DON'T get enough rest in a team operation. When you're in the bunk-- and here we're assuming you have a smooth riding truck--you are going to be constantly waking or half waking for every bad bump, every time the truck slows or stops(especially if your partner is Jake Brake happy) or if you get pulled around in the scales you have to wake up to say WTF? If you don't have a smooth riding truck, if your 5th wheel or tandems aren't right or you load is "riding funny" ----you're screwed. Of course all this is AFTER you train yourself how to sleep in a moving truck, which is only accomplished by becoming so exhausted you have no choice. At some point the truck HAS to stop and both of you need to get some good, un interrupted sleep, get a shower, sit down and eat a civilized meal, which some dispatchers don't seem to realize. I never ran so hard or have been so tired as when I ran team. I'll never do it again. Answer: Thanks for the replies - good advice all. Answer: I agree 100%.....Damn im glad that is over-er except for some fringe benifits Answer: What is this, a skit from "Comedy Central". Txnowtn.............you live in a beautiful part of Tennessee........I have a place just across the Smokey's from you in Bryon City, NC area...............best of luck in your endeavor...........personally myself........the only person I ever really trusted to run teams with was my twin brother (deceased now) years ago.......all I can say, I STILL remember being tired all the time from lack of sleep......because he loved rachet-jawing on the CB (I hate CB's) and listening to the cassette player real loud, that's why, I hate the song "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" to this day.. Answer: its not that bad if you choose the right person...I teamed with my best friend for 2 years. but I do agree with AFF on the loudmouth with the CB....Live in St. Louis? Looking for concrete truck drivers....great pay and benifits...pm for details Answer: LOL, yeah those are good for the start of the trip, but after a while you're both so tired and cranky you just don't care Yeah, I forgot to mention the stereo part And yes, you CAN "Slam" a bunk curtain shut! Answer: Runswithscissors.....................I noticed your Avatar, just curious...............is that a picture of "Chad Sexington's" feet with his new "High-Heals" everyone seems to be talking about on the "Round Table" forum? Chad................if you read this..............I'm just messin with you...........I really enjoy your humor and post. Answer: Ardmore Farms Forever wrote "Txnowtn.............you live in a beautiful part of Tennessee........I" It's beautiful if you can see past the 14 million tourists per year all piled up on the one road they put everybody on. Also, no jobs here except low paying seasonal tourist jobs. Answer: The very ones! Answer: I run team and have for 3 years. It's definetly something to get used to and the 10 and 10 deal has made it a lot tougher. If you can't sleep in a moving truck, trust your co driver, and accept the fact that you are living in a closet with another person don't even try it. You have to be concious in the fact the other person is sleeping all of the time you are driving. Your driving style and radio/CB use have to center around the other person sleeping because if they don't sleep well you will be trying to sleep behind a tired co driver. I do it for the extra money and the fact we can get a dedicated run and only be out 3 1/2 to 5 days a week. Answer: depend if you think you can handle being in that truck 24hrs a day with another person. i was a trainer 4 a while and i couldn't stand having some1 around me all the time. Answer: Spent my time scared to death with Mr. Rumble Strip as a partner. I still have nightmares that have that damn sound,.....you know the one,...the one that lets you know you are going to go off the road and die!! The guy would start hitting those strips 20 minutes after I went to the sleeper. Glad to be solo, not to mention the pee bottle,crap-covered underwear stashed on the top bunk, pepto bottles rolling around on the floor, and inviting hookers into the truck on my bed when I was off on a break. Still want to team??? You could not pay me enough to share a space that small with another person. Answer: I currently run teams and as of right now I am laid up w neck and back problems that flared up due to being bounced across I40 and back for six days. Although these problems dont stem from trucking I am probably going to go back solo b/c of this and the fact I cant sleep worth a damn in a moving truck.......have even took an ambien twice and it just made things worse.
