i'm 30 yrs old and going to start driving
Question:
why is everyone so negative about driving and it seems that everyone regrets going into this line of work, why?
i have a wife and a kid on the way, be honest if you want to tell me reasons not to do this.
i have wanted to go into this for years and will finally be able to do it.
Anything I should know?

Answer:
"I have a wife and a kid on the way," There's your reason, wait 'til the kid's grown. BOL

Answer:

That is the biggest reason.
My son was 6 months old when I first went on the road. I have missed him growing up - he is 9 1/2 now. I am no different than a "weekend dad", sometimes (most times) less.
I had been on the road for 3 years when my daughter was born. I almost didn't make it to her birth.
Is watching your kids grow up important to you? If so, consider either a local driving gig or another line of work.
Why do I do it, you ask? Because in the 10 years I have been married, my wife hasn't had to work, that's why.
Would I give it up if something else came along that would allow me to be home, and I could still support my family?
IN A HEARTBEAT.
Believe me, you can't raise a child over the telephone. You child will know that you aren't around.
I haven't been able to go to one of my kids' school plays, have missed birthdays, haven't been able to play with my kids, haven't been able to do all the things that come with fatherhood.
And missing those things hurts.

Answer:

You've listed two all important reasons not to.

You and your FAMILY have more options than the
vagabond "lifestyle"(snicker) of a vocation that is continuelly deteriorating
concerning wages and working conditions. You can do better.
Answer:

Not everyone is negative. But then again, some people are better able to ignore reality than others.

Because you will be an absentee husband and an absentee father. Do you really think you can be a good spouse and father when you only see your wife and kid 50-100 days a year or less?

No, you should have done it years ago before you had a wife and kid. This job is fine for a single person with no family. Now is too late - you owe your wife and kid your presence. Otherwise, why bother having a wife and kid if you aren't going to be around to enjoy them?
Answer:
i just want to use a couple years of OTR experience to move to something local, and my wife is supportive of it (even a little more than me)
yeah i won't be around much, but i really want my wife to stay home with the kid and I don't have much background for anything else.
I think i am going to just drive for a couple years then who knows, but thanks for everyone's honesty and i hope all of you the best.

Answer:
Nothing wrong with it. Just you will have more time to complain and moan then ever before.
If a trucker isn't companing he isn't happy.
As for missing your kids growing up. Boo Hoo.
Many of us have been stationed over seas for a year or more at a time with a new born at the home. Being gone 2 weeks or more at a time then home for a few days. Plenty of time.
You have folks that like working at Wal Mart and do it for 20 years, you have folks that enlist and do 20 years, you have folks that can not do 4 years of either.
Trucking is the same way.202 N Main Street

Answer:
this is a very stupid question but on another note. I am heavily tattooed. Do companies frown on that?

Answer:
some do, some do not.
As for OTR, most do not care. Now some offensive art on the neck or forehead........ Who knows.
There are some companies that can care less, others say no "body art" that is not covered by cloths.
I would say for the most part it will not be a problem.202 N Main Street

What is your current line of work son?

Answer:
i was actually laid off last week. I managed a cd and dvd retail store

Answer:
Now wait just a dadgum minute there daytrader...........................I drive a truck ,I'm not complaining and I'm happier than a two d**k dog.
But then again I'm a local driver, home everyday, off on weekends and grossed a littleover 55G this year.
Answer:
how long did it take you to get a local gig

Answer:
Six months OTR and then about six months on a Wal-Mart dedicated account running eight states.
I have been pulling a flatbed hauling lumber locally for just over two years now with a short stint hauling bricks.
The gig works for me...................good pay, good bennies, and I have a life outside the truck.
Answer:
that's exactly what i'm going for. I just want a couple years OTR then a local, you have what I want sir
