Looking for advice on finding a job/gaps in employment/4 pts
Question:
I need some advice from those more experienced in the trucking industry about finding a job. In June 2002 I obtained my CDL A through a trucking school and drove OTR for a major OTR trucking company through October 2002. Then due to my family situation and my son being ill I switched to a local company hauling cement. In Dec 2003 the brakes on the truck didn't work and I had an accident in which I was charged with running a stop sign and my DMV does show crash occurred Adjudicaton withheld. I was injured from this accident and had surgery in Feb 2004. I left the cement truck job in Jan 2004. In Jan 2004 I did receive a 4 pt speeding ticket while visiting relatives which is also on my MVR. I also have on record failure to pay for an expired tag which my license was suspended for. My son continued to need full time care after I started feeling better, and as my wife has a very good job and I was already off this was just the best choice for us - for me to stay home with my then 4 yr old while he went through his own health issues with his kidney. My son had his two kidney surgeries this last summer and now I am ready to find a job. My license is no longer suspended, paid the fine, and my family is healthy again, just poor. Would appreciate advice about how my driving record may be viewable to future employers, what kind of employers may not have a problem with issues on my MVR. If there is any known way to straighten up my records and/or present myself more favorably. Also concerned about my lapse in employment. I can confirm that I was ill for a time and that my son was ill for a time as I have the bills, but am concerned that if I eleborate too much of my surgery future employers may get the wrong message about me, that I am fragile or a potential work comp claim. This is not true, I have fully recovered and am able to load freight, or whatever I need to do. BTW, I am in Northern Florida. Appreciate your comment. Thank you. Answer: Anything else you aren't telling? I wouldn't think you would have much of a problem w/ 1 ticket and 1 accident in the past 3 years. The only way to straighten up a driving record is time. As far as gaps in employment, all they really are looking for is a reason why you weren't working. If you had surgery, and have a current DOT physical, you shouldn't have any problems.
