Laptop on the Road?
Question:
How does this work? Do you go through you cell phone? If so how do you hook that up? Do you have a list of number for local numbers to use? I am just confused as to how you stay connected to the internet while on the road. And too do you pay extra fees to stay connected?

Answer:
There's several ways that you can choose from.
AOL, Pre-paid Internet CDROM's, wireless modem, I guess the list has so many different possibilities.
I don't have a laptop yet, so I just drop a few bucks in the Truck Stop internet kiosks if I have time.

I use park-n-view at the truckstops(those little yellow boxes) it costs me 15 a month for unlimited. I also have att worldnet, they have an 800# dial up (it costs an additional 10cents a minute) for that, you can find local numbers for att in most areas, but the truckstops do not let you make local calls on there phones so you have to use the 800 number. However, obviously if you have a terminal in a certain city and a plug-in you can find a local number usually. It works well, as a matter of fact i am on pnv writing this now in lake park ga. I have always been able to get online when i have needed, once you figure the system out, it works fine.

I also use PNV. Mine is 30.00 a month, supposed to be premium service. It's a fairly easy to use service and has long distance and cable TV.
I didn't know those beat up looking boxes in Lake Park work. I'll have to try them next time.

You guys that use parknview. I thought they went bankrupt? They are obviosly back and up running again. Anyways, how axactly does it work? Ive seen the machines at the truckstops for parknview but never really looked at them. Do you have to purchase the cables and then use some kind of prepaid service, or is it like aol where they just take the money out of your bank account? Also is there a listing somewhere of what truckstops have the hookups to use it?

Answer:
I really can't add anything that hasn't already been said other than...
I've done the PPV thing, only problem is, when you want to connect there usually aren't any within a 300 mile radius of your location.
Truckstops? Are a joke! Flying J for example, you can only get out using a 1-800 number which with providers like AOL mean MAJOR cost.
The problem with a server such as MSN is, if they do not have a local dial up number for the area your in, your out of luck.
The best solution I've found is to limit my on-line time to my night and weekend use using my cell phone.
Most cell phone company programs begin with somewhere around 4500 minutes night and weekends which doesn't sound like much but that equals 72 hours which is approx 2 hours a day.
I use Sprint and just upgraded to un-limited time on night and weekends for no extra charge.
Yes, my time is limited meaning that I can only connect between 9p.m.-7a.m. and on weekends, but this way is much better than trying to find a location to connect. Plus, you can connect in your truck, sitting outside enjoying the sun, or where ever you like (unless your phone is roaming).

Yep, there still up and running.
The next time you run across a Pilot or TA or any other place with the pods, check it out.
Most of the cashiers will explain it to you-it;s pretty simple.
Ypu purchase a kit for around 40 bucks which include a phone, phone line and cable line for tv.
There are vending machines inside that look similar to phone card machines to purchase time cards.
The cards are by the day or month and there are different channel options just like cable tv offers.
I would suggest though, unless you run a dedicated route or usually know where your going to end up at, stick with the daily cards which are 5 bucks. The monthly cards are quit a bit more expensive to buy not knowing for sure if you'll be able to use it much.
Hope this helps.

Like the other guys said, in most t/a truckstops and pilots also, they have the start up kit, that has phone cable and tv cable, also has the software program to install the pnv program on your computer. I have it deducted from my credit card, i only use the internet service because i have a satellite dish for my television. I can not speak to the quality of the tv service as i have never used it. And yes, those boxes in lake park ga work, one word though, not all the boxes in a truckstop work, so you may have to search for one that does, also sometimes a whole row will not work in a truckstop but if you move to the next row, they all work. They seem to work pretty consistently for me now that the new company bought them. Anyway, it is not that difficult to use. Good luck
