C-12 CAT
Question:
I HAVE A OPPERTUNITY TO BUY A T-600 (kw) WITH LOW MILES
IT HAS A C-12 CAT WITH 370/430 HP AND 3.70 REAR RATIO. HOW STRONG
IS THIS ENGINE WITH PULLING 80,000 LBS. CAN THE (hp) BE TURNED UP?
WHAT KIND OF FUEL MILLAGE CAN I EXPECT TO GET WITH THIS CAT?
(btw) ITS A 1999 , WITH 370,000 MILES. THANKS!!!

Answer:
You should place this question in the Owner Operators forum. Alot of different people go there than here. You would get a few more responses from those who have run tat specific engine also.
My opinion is it is strong enough to pull 80K and the truck was probably designed to do so.

Answer:
I drove a pete with about the same setup as the one your are talking about. the C-12 did pull the load good on the flats but i got passed by everyone on the hills. and the h-p was at max. nice truck just was slow up the hills

Answer:

Slow up the hills pretty well sums up the engine. I drove one at Celadon and it would lose speed pulling an empty van up the "hills"on I-75.

Answer:
For a C-12, that's about all you're gonna get. If you need to pull hills with a maxed-out load, be prepared to gear down a lot and put your 4-ways on. Might be a good time to eat lunch, too......
Answer:
I like mine...
The truck I drive here at Aartman has a C-12 spec'd at 430 h.p., 1650 lb. ft. torque, geared at 3.70 in a 10-speed tranny, and I run around 80,000 pounds gross all the time (average about 52,000 net payload)...I never have to drop more than two gears unless I get stuck behind someone else or am pulling a hill in CA (can't run too fast there )! I am getting 5.9 m.p.g total with 54% idle time, and 6.3 m.p.g for my driving economy. "Pain is weakness leaving the body."

Answer:
One of the co's I drove for bought 20 new Petes w/C-12's,10 speeds and 4.1 axles.
The trucks with the 12.7 DD @ 470hp had the same setup. The 430 Cats woul'd run away from the 470DD's on the hills!
But every Cat engine had major problems before 100K. Every one left someone stranded somewhere. I got stranded in Death valley,Ca when the fuel pump primer blew out of the pump.
Turbo's, Liners, broken Pistons, rods, Computers etc. Every one of those trucks got turned back into Pete before 200K.

Answer:
The ones we have are very reliable (C-12 and C-13). However, on these C-13's (just from being around them) I know that you must have the overhead done when scheduled or else!!!
