Question about Axels
Question:
In vendors documentation for trucks, I see the following description as it pertains to Axels. Can someone explain(describe) what it consist of, and how many of the axel are actually live(connected to a driveshaft) as oppose to just supporting the load. 4x2 6x4 6x6 8x8 I am assuming, 4X2 means One steer Axel and One live axel. And live axel consit of double tires each side. But that does not make senses if I try to follow my assumption for the other configuration, so I am obviously wrong. NewBee Answer: 4-x-2 power to 2 wheels or sets of wheels(duels) 6-x-2 one rear axle don't have power going to it,it's just a tag axle like a trailer axle, its just rolls and has no power going to it. 6-x-6 all 3 axles have power including the steering axle Zigzag a certified failure at OTR trucking. Answer: normal tractors are 6-x-4,both rear axles have power(twin screw) 4-x-4 pickups have power going to both the front and rear axle Zigzag a certified failure at OTR trucking. Answer: It's wheels not axles. Examples 4x2 pick up 4x6 single axle tractor 6x6 4wd duelly ie utility truck 8x8 tandem drive Mike Answer: 4x6 single axle tractor Single Axel Tractor ....hence means I Steer and one Rear(drive). What I do not understand is what the 4 means and what the 6 means. As it pertains to axel versus wheels. I just checked again and spec's all use same way to describe Axel Specification look here. Still confused...LOL! NewBee Answer: http://www.truckpaper.com/listings/forsale/models.asp?guid=dl0sm3fi&etid=1&bcatid=27&catid=5&man=VOLVO volvo truck models WIA42-single axle 4-x-2 WIA62-tamden tag axle 6-x-2 WIA64-twin screw 6-x-4 the 4 or 6 stands for the number of hubs the 2 or 4 stands for the number of hubs with power Zigzag a certified failure at OTR trucking. Answer: "4x6 single axle tractor" it's wrong, look at the pictures in the truck paper Zigzag a certified failure at OTR trucking. Answer: Thank you very much zigzag...now it makes total sense... 6x4= 6 hubs with 4 of these hubs with traction...(tandem axel both on a screw)... Great explanation finally makes sense . Your tha man! NewBee Answer: Proves you gotta keep your mouth shut when you don't have the facts. Mike Answer: RABELAM I got an edge on this crap, used to sell parts Newbee when you find BBC and want to know what that means,it's (bumper to back of cab) Freightliners FLD11264 the 112 is BBC and 6-x-4 112 is the short hood 120 is the regular hood 132 is the classic Zigzag a certified failure at OTR trucking. Answer: Thank you for your support and sharing the information. I will admit that BBC was another one that was puzzling me, however a while back I found somewhat of a Trucker's Acronym site which helped understand a few off them not so evident terms. But the axel one was nowhere to be found, well certainly not in the simplistic way you have described it. For readers who like me, are new to this and might need some help, this site might help. Once again thank's to all who care to share their wealth of knowledge. NewBee Copyright ? 2006 - 2007 www.thankhealth.com Privacy Policy
