Hub miles vs. household goods movers guide vs RAND-MCNALLEY
Question:
Is there much difference between the Rand McNalley and Houshold Goods Movers guide mileage? They both pretty much short change you from hub miles is that correct? Is one better than the other?
Is that what a company means when the talk about "dispatched" miles?

Answer:
Not enough difference to worry about depends on what software they use to route you more than anything.
"Dispatched" miles? Thats what ever the company says is what the miles are.
Hub miles is the only way to really get paid for all your miles.
However with drivers running out of route, getting lost, pulling in and out of truckstops 4 or 5 times a day. You can see why most if not all companies will not pay by hub miles.

Answer:
Cap
Thanks.Thats pretty much what i figured..just wanted to be sure. Is there some ratio that is considered "usual" between hub miles and the others.. like the miles paid according to these or miles dispatched are usually X(?) percent less than hub?

Answer:
Yep sure is about 10% off from paid to actual miles ya drive give or take. That is if you follow any route that the company gives you. However you may not want to take the shortest way because it maybe more of pain then what its worth.
If you can get a map'n program, then just compare the companies, to your program for awhile. You will see that most of the time you will not want to go the shortest way. No matter what you do you will be short on your paid miles.
The trick is to find the fast way there and get loaded or unloaded. If you worry about the real miles and paid miles it wil drive you crazy. Sometimes the long way around is faster.Thats the way this works in truck driving wish it was different but for now ya got to live with it.
Also rember to add time to your driving to make up for the difference. They say 500 miles it will most likely be 550+ give or take some. Yes that adds up over a year but until someone in the government does something about it thats the way it is.
If you ask a company they will tell you how the pay their miles its up to you to accept their way or go to work for someone else. Nothing says rookie faster than a company driver complaining about how they are being cheated out of miles because of HHMG.

Answer:
well time is money so I guess fast vs. short is a bit of a trade off.. I just wanted to make sure that I wasnt being gouged TOO badly thats why I wondered if there was some kind of ration like 10 percent less etc.
I am a newbie..havent even signed on wiht company and just exploring my options and trying to get some facts and opinions going in
thanks for the info

Answer:
There can be a big difference between Rand McNally and HHG miles.
With Rand, it depends on how you use the program. I have Rand on my computer. I use 'shortest" and "Quickest"
Shortest will get you close to the HHG miles, but, not the routing. Unless you have the trucking version, which cost a small fortune to buy. I paid $40.00 for my program. I've been using Rand since 1997

Answer:

..............

That works out to about 1 month out of your year, that you are not paid.

That's right. But, it is not the formula that matters... It is the rate applied to the formula. When you get right down to it, it is a piece/rate job, and the majority pay about the same, within a limited range. And the rate is too low, IMHO.Government Ain't YO' Friend. Nor your Servant.

Answer:
Dak..big difference which way? Does Rand give thr driver more paid miles than HHG?

Answer:
55 Sams..yeah 28-30 seems pretty low but most of the co's say theri drivers avg between 2500-3000 per week. Not great money, but certainly not too bad.. but I get the idea you do bust tail for it.

Answer:
28-30 cts of course and 2500-3000 mi..should have specified that

Answer:

Some pay actual hub miles, but usually at a lower rate. Some pay HHG, where there is 12% to 15% difference from actual miles. The rate varies a little, from different companies. There are people driving for $0.25 cpm, and others driving for more than double that. The higher paid drivers are a minority. Don't out think it.
When there is freight to be moved, you will get paid what you agreed to work for, unless there are some mysterious things that make it shrink. It happens. When there is no freight to be moved, then you are somewhere but home, spending time and money, making nothing.
$0.30 x 3,000 miles = $900.
Subtract taxes, then subtract $150-$200 for OTR expenses. Ask yourself if you wouldn't be happier doing something else. Even working 2 jobs, you would be home, and likely do better.
Maybe not. But, if you are young, get some training in another field, before you go to driving.Government Ain't YO' Friend. Nor your Servant.

Answer:

Companies say a lot of things but if you expect them to tell you the truth, you're going to be disappointed.
While it is certainly possible to legally drive "2500-3000 per week", I think that what you're going to actually encounter is about 2400 as a high weekly average AFTER you finish training. With a flatbed carrier, you'll probably get fewer miles; with a reefer, maybe a few more. The overall industry average is right around 120,000 miles per year per truck and that includes teams.

It's not so much that you actually work hard but, rather, that you're going to have to put in a lot of hours. If you consider that your work day begins when you do your pre-trip in the morning and ends when you put the truck to bed at night, you'll most likely find that you're being paid at the rate of about $8 per hour during your first year.

HHG pays me 420 round trip to indy each night. I do it in 414 on the HUB.

That sounds like a chitty deal. Pay for schooling and work 12 months, get paid for 11. No wonder I never see any sharp people in this field. Must be desperate or playing out that kid fantasy. Whoop Whoop______
