When you do get paid where do you put your money?
Question:
I know this is a bit of a personal question but after reading different posts in other forums on Truck.Net, I got curious as to where a person places their wages.
Some I have read use comdata to access the personal funds, some I think withdraw money from atms using the atm cards ( I know from another topic truck stop atms charge more then using your debit card at another banks atm) and others I am guessing just withdraw from their personal bank accounts to take with them.
I have thought that just direct deposit into your own bank account might be easier and just use the debit card as a credit card but I would like some opinions on the best way to do this.
A side note: wouldn't using travelers checks be safer to use then cash when on the road?

Answer:

Broke truckers would rather have cash when selling their tv...cb....ect.
Big

Answer:
If you want safe: the safest thing to use is your credit card. If you loose a credit card or if it is stolen you are only on the hook for $50. Just remember to pay your card off every month or you will get into deep trouble fast.

Answer:
I used direct deposit for 100% of my pay, never took advances from the companies.
i would sooner have a happy robber cleaning me out, than some mad as hell person putting a bullet in me.I would prefer a thank you sucker, than a bullet. So I didn't worry about having a wad of money on me when i left home and if needed i would hit an ATM machine and get $200 more
who wants to pee off a crazy guy with a gun by only having a few dollars to give him???
Answer:
Ziggy, kinda hard to get robbed goin down the road at 60-65 ain't it? Fuel at the terminal drop hook at the terminal I mean where do ya get robbed? I suppose a fellow employee could rob ya but doubt it. Where you hang out Ziggy? I ain't goin to that part of the country.www.daveramsey.com

Answer:
What in the world are you talking about Towstrap. In my time driving I have only fueled at one terminal. Every other time it was at a TS. Where do you park at night, TS's, rest areas or ramps. You can get robbed at any one of those placed. Ever do a pre-trip in the dark at a TS or park to go in and eat in the back row or any row for that matter?
I can only guess your fairly new or never driven to not know about the problems you can encounter on the road. It's some thing all newbies need to learn and know. Always keep an eye out for things you least expect. It can happen and it does happen.
As to the question. The post referring to using a fuel card for personal money is referring to an O/O who has trhe ability like most drivers to take an advance off your fuel card. Most companies allow you take take predetermined amounts daily or weekly. Those advances are a very bad habbit to get into.If you do it to often your pay check will dwindle down to nothing.
I like some others have my paychecks direct deposited into my bank. That way I know where it is and I have access to it almost any where. I also use my credit card on the road and pay it off monthly and some times sooner.
There are some who take the option of putting their paychecks on the Comcard. I don't like that as well because I can move it around, from checking to savings to credit a lot easier through my bank.

Well lets see.
There are the Lot Lizards.
The Cherry Machines.
The CB shop.
The Chrome Shop.
80lbs of buffet food a week.
And I cannot forget all those one pound bags of potatoes chips with several gallons of Mountain Dew.
Anyone want to buy some load locks???

Answer:
Any one who claims to have been out there for 18 years and has never slept in a TS, ate in a TS, Pre-tripped in a TS or simply doesn't know of problems that can happen in a TS or a rest area or many other places is simply a LIAR..
You can take your little wanna be childish self back to the place where others like you thrive, you know the one. There's a big difference in being scared and being smart. I doubt some here are capable of understanding that.

Answer:

news flash, the world ain't all about you

Answer:
Some times I have no clue what some of these people are talking about. But how could I, I doubt they do either.

Answer:
It was a joke, Stuffs. They were joking.
I take direct deposit and access cash with my debit card. Like zigzag (used to do), I carry at least $200 in cash, and usually withdraw the maximum $200-$300 the ATMs allow for each transaction. Fewer transactions of larger amounts means a smaller percent of your cash flow goes to transaction charges. Too frequent ATm withdrawls can be very expensive compared to less frequent $300 transactions.
I never take payroll advances with the company's $4 transation fee. And besides, it means getting approval over the QualComm and writing a check and cashing it at a fuel desk..... It's easier to keep a cushion in checking and withdrawing it at your convenience when you find a cheap ATM. Always carry lots of cash.
Suprisingly, I've felt less vulnerable to robbery in OTR trucking than any other type of work I've done before. I never worry too much about someone taking my money. It's my inability to keep it from slipping through my fingers I have the most trouble with... :
Note: A wallet chain is very practical in trucking since you're constantly buying stuff and using various fuel and points cards, etc. There are so many opportunities to lose your wallet, which also contains your CDL (and probably your short DOT medical) which you can't operate the truck under any circumstances without. If you're not used to a wallet chain, it might feel a little hokey, like you're trying to act like a biker or something. But I've found it's the most dependable way to make sure you never misplace your wallet.

Answer:
ATM charges
Are usually high in truckstops and the limit to what the machine will give is most times about $100,walk next door if there is a gas station or someplace and get money, you can use the exercise also.
a few dollars a week to get your own money adds up times 52 weeks
easy to spend hundreds of dollars a year in fee's
add in paying for showers sometimes because your not able to combine it with a company fuel stop
add in buying coke's and stuff from the truckstop C-stores
it's easy to spend a few thousands dollars on the road a year, with proper planning it can mostly be avoided without being a total miser
just watch the dollar here and dollar there or you will spend a lot over the year that you could do something better with than just wasting it for no reason.
