Me and my big bad criminal record and getting a new driving
Question:
I recently recieved a little legal trouble that is summary probation for a pair of misdemeanors and am being informed by a few companies I've applied to that there are duration of time quotas that must be undertaken before I am considered for employment and I am unable to understand the scope of insurance regulations such that I might better use my time in applying at companies that could qualify me to drive...so I might have a job. Any advice? Answer: What companies have you applied to? A couple misdemeanors is worse than one and is alot worse than none. But some companies will hire with them. Depending on what you were convicted of, since we don't know, it might just be a "bad criminal record" and make you undesirable by most. Things like theft come to mind. The only one I know of and there might be more is Steven's Transport, TX.. They wont hire with certain types of convictions either. So depending you may or may not find a driving job very easily. Answer: I'll tell you for one, I got confidence, brother, that things are going to be just dandy. Answer: That's just the thing, now that I've got a minute to post decently. I'm not sure if it's decent for me to post those things here, I don't know the branches of trucking insurance OR the interests of just anyone who comes here looking for advice being guaranteed at all costs that they are not going to at some future point be led down the wrong road for being blunt and honest. I don't trust myself to feel good about making mistakes now and being okay with suffering about them later because of personal information of mine like criminal history floating around at this board, but if I didn't have any common sense I wouldnt be trying to get jobs with trucking companies large and small across the board. If it was theft I would probably and should have anyway gone to the Legal Forum. If it was theft I'm not sure it would be any different, still a misdemeanor, if it was theft I may not be hoping so much for a really good truckjob. I've driven trucks before and I'd be really, really surprised if I couldn't drive Canada or Mexico. How many criminal background check companies are there, anyway? Aren't they all the same? Doesn't almost every company just use DAC? Is it the insurance companies that decide these things?............so much out of my control at this point until I exhaust myself with my efforts to get the job I want and settle for something. I've actually been disappointed by some larger companies telling me I have to wait 3 to 5 to 7 years after the conviction date to secure employment with them. I don't just operate with confidence, though, I've got a good deal of experience with things working out better than I thought they would because I take things too hard for them to actually be that hard. :) Answer: Well you wont be going to Canada. So you might as well tell companies that right up front. They'll find your record even if it's only through DAC. My best idea would be to use TN's or classadrivers.com's application and list your record. Then when/if some one calls you they will know. Just make sure you talk with the safety dept. at any company who's recruiter tells you all is well. There have been a few stories here of recruiters getting the driver to orientation and then they were sent home for something the recruiter said was OK. Just cover your basis and start applying and calling. If nothing else there are programs you qualify for that will train you in lots of jobs. Their at your local Job Service. Good Luck Answer: I'll be calling Steven's later after they see my application, then wait for some of the other half dozen or so companies I've applied with to say something on the phone on Monday. Apparently there is no good advice you can offer Stuff with regard to helping someone, like myself, who is asking you questions you apparently don't want to admit your ignorance of, or authorship of, to find a professional dig ,whilst being unsure of the post protocol. We can't give each other the secret handshake, I guess huh, but you know what, truck drivers are not criminals just because there are thousands of professional drivers out there with criminal records looked at as assets and patriots by their companies and families and communities. If I find out different than you I won't bother to enlighten you. I will be getting another final authoritive comment regarding Canadian clearance sooner or later probably from someone with the perspective to make a difference in my efforts. I'm not in real hurry to get to Canada anyway. (Or Mexico for that matter.) Answer: From Everytruckjobs.com I did a search by state, the drop down menu on desired position as new graduate. Each company will state whether they will consider a felony charge or not. Try these companies: Roehl Transport USA Truck Lube-Tech Best of luck. Answer: when you get to the company then they check you out . it means nothing to send them info up front I did that with us-x they said the felony would not be a problem well it was .. I faxed all the court papers before I went to them. they just want to fill class seats . After 3 days they sent me home said it was do to the 13 yr old felony which they new about before I got there. Answer: I'm extremely sorry, There definately exists a mode of misunderstanding here, (or possibly with me somehow????) as there are absolutely NO felonies of any kind on my record or implied in my previous conversation that I am dealing with. I have NO felon record. I have NO felonies on my record as of today. I am attempting to discuss matters pertaining to misdemeanors and myself only. I am just looking for a better company that has more relaxed observations in regard to misdemeanors and thusly brighter and possibly more realistic prospects. I've driven trucks before and am not entirely a newbie in being able to recognize and cope with the scope of practices of the industry, just someone who does very well for the most part relying on myself to win in the smallest (usually the hardest ) ways. I haven't driven since '95. I have confidence in my overall qualifications record being probably qualifying enough, to be able to state that I have yet begun to drive, in terms of demonstrating what is valuable to an employer in these advanced times. Thank You. Answer: Does anyone know what the worst case scenario that would put me out were I to discuss the nature of the misdemeanors here? My court case has already been sentenced, so it's not like I can't talk about it or anything, and I want to, to be more conclusive with the advice I could get to find hopefully that I'm not left behind. I'm no lawyer, attorney, or street attorney, however; I really kind of think that there are better things ahead. Answer: 100years, regardless if you have 20 years previous experience, if that experience is not within the last 3 years you are not qualified. My advice to you is to start calling companies. I provided a link in my previous post to search for jobs. There are many companies that do not impose criminal background checks, nor do they use DAC services. You're biggest issue in hiring on with the smaller companies is the same as I stated above..... recent experience. Check with Swift. They will run you through a short training period with a trainer and should cut you lose in a few weeks solo. Answer: Below are good places to check out companies and see if they'll accept your "big bad criminal record" and if they would hire a "Patriot" such as yourself. I thought you stated it was theft but I see now it wasn't. But doesn't really matter much. No need to enlighten me either, not real concerned about it. But I to have a minor conviction that is 31 years old and the best authority on the subject, Canadian Customes, said no entry without a permit. The permit 5 years ago cost $200 for a standard customs permit and another $800 for a Ministers Permit. No guarantees if it would be signed or not and no refund if it wasn't. The conviction had to be 5 years old and proof of reabilitaion had to be given. Although my record has been expunged I just don't go. I could fax you the paper work if you like. The best authority I know of is Canadian Customs. Give them a call and tell them what you were convicted of and they will tell you yes or no. Search jobs/companies for hiring qualifications. Job App and Company Info Job App and Company Info I still think Stevens would be a good place to start. There is no need to discuss what you were convicted of because non of us make the hiring decisions for any company that I know of. Not for companies where newbies and those starting over will have to apply anyway. You would be smart to discuss it with the companies. They'll need to know. Answer: I'm just on it. Answer: I haven't called Lube-Tech so I don't know their hiring domicile but I have my roots in Appleton. And the following websites I have submitted my CDL # to for truck driving jobs: The one here at Truck.Net, Bigtruckdrivingjobs.com, truckerjobsearch.com, and the ClassAdrivers.com. I am no doubt done, redone, done reduntantly abundantly and done. I have a regular schedule of seeing if Waste Management is hiring in my area also, and numerous other things going on. On top of that, a company that turned me down ( I think) jsut showed up in the form of an application in my mail, with one from 67x% company new to me; that's good: one of these days very soon I am going to be STEPPING up the way to where the steering wheel is and leaving all this investment in ink to catch some sunshine. regularly edited by In100years See me next time!
