I do not know what companies you have worked for that had Qual com.
The last one I worked for had you down to every 15 mins automatic. When you called in the phone matched up your driver id and showed you truck and last location. If they wanted to ping you for EXACT location. It took about 5 seconds.
A 100k truck and a 30k trailer. With what ever the freight is on it. Could land you in some very hot water.

Once JB put the tracking units on the trailers my wife and I were having to go check on empty trailer a bit. Was told to just hook up to it. That way it pinged. They have a batt that only lasts about 5 days uless they are plugged in. That is how they charge.
A truck with no qualcom hooks to a trailing unit. It is sent right to security. The computer has a tracking and placment. If the trailer is supposed to be moving there is not problem. If the thing is supposed to be down and now it is 100 miles away. They work on it hard.
The units they put in the trailers can do so much more it is not even funny.
If they wanted to check say. Temp inside trailer, if the trailer is loaded or empty, high odor in trailer or a few other special areas. Even has a light sensor for when the doors are open.
Nice and set in. Most have no idea they are even there.
The one thing that the company screwed up. The tracking light. It is in the center of the trailer on front. It never lights up unless being tracked.
Tells me when I see it ,it is something I may want.
Once they installed these units the theif rate on the trailers was cut by 95%.
For some dumb reason they did not do the rail this way. I guess they move to much and get lost sitting to be feasible.
Also, the trucks ECM is a real taddletale. The truck I leased on to them before I left was not ever part of them. It was and I still own that truck. Yet, the qual com included all functions of the truck.
The industry has come a long way in the tech factor. JB make the top in tech companies every year. They do not just use it on the dispatchers computers. They seem to put it were the money is. In the trucks.
Any one that was working at JB when they did the unit install. They know. It was a mad house. Take a trailer here and drop it so it could be installed.
