Living space while training on the road
Question:
These questions has been on my final two brain cells for some time: 1) What is it like to share such a small space with two people for so long.? 2) I know the rookie driver has the top bunk so how much weight can the top bunk hold? I am a fairly big man so stressing tolerances for an over head bunk is a concern for me cause I have visions of it collapsing onto the trainer. The reason I ask the second question is because a friend of mine in college said that the bunks he had while there were rated for 700 pounds cause they held him and his girlfriend at that time (he was roughly 230 and I am guessing that she was between 130 to 150) Any information would be appreciated Thanks Answer: While training at MCT, years ago, I had a student that weighed in at over 400 lbs. He slept on the top bunk when the truck was not moving. He wanted to sleep up there all the time, even when we started running team near the end of his training. No way. That's all I would need is a 400 lb guided missle launched out of a slingshot. Seriously, the top bunks will hold LOTS of weight. GOOD LUCK. Answer: It sux. It's the aroma of feet and a$$ and bad morning breath. Yep, I was stuck in a prison called the Folsom County Freightliner. Been there, done that. Never again. I wish that happened to my second trainer - he was a real a-hole. But seriously, don't worry about the weight issue. Just recon any Country Pride buffett line and see the half-moons spilling out as the slobs bend over to shovel more food onto their plates. If those bunks can hold behemoths like that, they can withstand a ton of force, trust me. Answer: I had a student who was over 400 lbs. She managed to hoist herself onto the top bunk, but then the return trip to the ground level was pretty scary. I had to help her down, and there I stood between the seats with a 400 lb person about to drop on me. I envisioned the scenario as follows... She would lose her grip on the cabinet, her foot would slip off the top of the lower cabinet, or never connect... I'm holding her other hand, so when she falls, I'm crushed underneath her. At the point of her fall, I am pushed backwards against the gear shift. It goes into gear. The truck shudders a bit, and starts moving. Since neither of us is in a position to pull the gear shift out of gear, we continue rolling against the brakes which should have held us, but obviously are NOT. There's a drop-off ahead... or a building, ... or the fuel island... or whatEVER!!! The fact is we are rolling, and no one is in control! We switched bunks. I gave her the lower bunk, and I used the top for the next two weeks. It was easier, and put my nightmares to rest. Answer: Oh come on now. You know it's just like an extended camping trip. Well, you do get pretty stinky while camping. I hope your trainer showers everyday. Alot of drivers don't like to waste the time. My trainer didn't. Have fun. Answer: That's what I always say... treat it like a camping trip. Have fun. Learn. Upgrade! I was anxious about the same thing. Don't worry, they're fine. The top bunk's heavy duty (at least, they are in Freightliner condos... I can't speak for other models). It was secure enough to meet my judicious satisfaction. Answer: If your with a trainer,you will never have to use the top bunk. You will be running team from day 1 to the final day. So that leaves the bottom rotating between you and your so called trainer. Answer: Depends on the company. Regardless, it's illegal to use the top bunk when the truck is rolling down the road. Answer: nothing beats sharing space with a fat,smelly trucker!!!!!!!! brings back the old days.....been there did that....wont go back Answer: Hey I kind of resemble that remark in a wanna be kind of way. Well, I guess the one thing I really should be worrying about is the kind of smelly vapor that is emminating throughout the cab. Smelly feet are one thing the other stuff can to quote my dad.
