Rookies first mistake
Question:
Well tested ouy with swift on wed was put in a truck and told first load was going to ms. well load gets to gary in late and Im in a hurry. To make a long story short I HAD THE WRONG FRICKEN TRAILER. iT WAS GOING TO MARYLAND. What a fudge up dm said get the mistakes out of the way early and the gate should have cought it at are terminal where I picked up the load at. Answer: Almost every semi-serious mistake I've made in this business has been for that very reason. As soon as you get over the 'jitters' and slow down, the job becomes much easier. BOL Answer: Never get "in a hurry" it causes to many mistakes and to many accidents Remember to take your time and do things in the same order every time just to make it easier. Make a check list for yourself and use it, use it, use it. Start with the personal pretrip, ie, clothes, personal items, food, prescription drugs (enough to stay out for 2 weeks longer than you plan) and anything else that you need and use up. Load pretrip, what is it? where is it? where is the paperwork? where is it going? when does it unload? Lumper? trailer # seal # Then Tractor pretrip Trailer pretrip checking trailer # and seal # again if preloaded trailer note on the bill preloaded and sealed, note on the log book the same, qualcom the dm that info during your 'loaded' report it's a CYA for yourself When your all done your good to go: Except one last thing get out and walk around the rig and check the numbers, tires, doors, and hookup one last time Answer: Poor planning on their part does mean it's a emergency on your part. (I heard that some where) I agree with Phil. My biggest mistakes were when I was in a hurry. So, did you go to Ms or to Md? Answer: went to ms the next two trailers Ive checked the # a dozen times even in route dont want to do that one again home for the weekend then go out for 2. Wasnt gonna even do my first run till after monday because of a doctors appt. But they promised Id get home and actually kept this one. Answer: I agree with the advice given, but one other thing too. Always make sure the bills agree with where dispatch says you are going. It is not that uncommon to be told to go get load 123 going to Memphis, TN and the bills say load 123 is suppose to go to Chicago, IL. (or even better Memphis, IN. ). Answer: Rookies first mistake is becomming a Rookie in this vocation. Answer: We had a experienced ( 2 plus years Exp. ) newly hired driver, not only picked up the wrong trailer in the terminal yard, he picked up an empty. Drove that empty tanker all the way to PA from FL. He was suppose to be delivering a 48,000lb load of Orange Juice to PA....LOL I use to ask my Recruiter/Safety Director, Where in the "F" do you find them? He's said I don't, they find ME!!! I'll tell him to cut the phone line and weld the doors shut... Answer: Yeah, just another Swift driver "in a hurry" to make his $.28/mile. One of our drivers had a run-in with another Swifty who was "in a hurry" last night in KY. The Swifty was in such a hurry that he didn't have time to stop after he took the front clip off my driver's tractor!! Luckily, Swift puts BIIIG numbers on their trailers. I have a feeling one more Super Twucker is gonna be at the unemployment office tomorrow...... Answer: If that's all you did i'd say not a bad rookie mistake to make. Answer: I had that happen to me a few weeks ago. A swifty parking lot was following me, and I decided since there was a stop sign I should at least make a rolling stop. The Swifty decided to go around me across a double solid line with the diagonal lines in the middle so he/she could get ahead of me. I made my rolling stop, and continued on, but had to slow and stay on the shoulder cuz dum friggin swifty didn't even have the curtiousy to move into the fast lane. So swifty got ahead of me for a 1/4 mile or so, then I showed him my tail lights for a few minutes, and never seen swifty again. Answer: Ehh, I wouldn't bet on that.
