Cabovers?
Question:
How come i dont see cabovers hardly anymore.... Are they that bad of a truck or is it something else? Answer: I saw a brand-new Freightliner cabover a couple weeks ago. It had an automatic staircase that pivoted out using servo motors. I thought it was pretty cool. Answer: Yeah i just looked it up.....its called the argosy. Now i talked to a friend a little while ago and he said that with a cabover the turning radious is unbelievable... what are some other pro's and con's of a cabover? Answer: You don't see as many as you used to. There is some old ones floating around. The only thing I liked about them was if you was backing in a tight spot in an alley close to a wall it was a little easier. Down side was after driving for a long time they were a bear to climb in and out of. Not to mention they rode rougher than a conventional, plus if I was ever going to hit something head on I wanted more than a windshield to absorb the impact! Answer: Yes, that's it! That's the one. Answer: Why is it they ride so rough? Answer: They would be designed better today. I have not been in one since the early 80's. They had a lot of heat coming out of the engine into the cab and they would bounce and jar you around more than a conventional back then. Now the newer conventionals ride a lot better, smoother than they used to. Air ride suspensions help a lot. Answer: Conventionals usually have more interior room, and the engines are eaier to access and work on. Plus conventionals also have better ride quality. Because of the short wheelase and that the drivers seat is directly over the steer axle. Answer: Would any of you drivers say buy a new/used argosy cabover or would u stay with a conventional....Also does anyone own a newer argosy or currently driving one? Answer: this is a topic i LOVE.. i am a fan of COEs. they are a FAR more practical vehicle when it comes to backing and getting in and out of tight places.. since they went to flat floor, you have almost and in some cases just as much room in a cabover as in a hood.. there ARE some pros and cons to cabovers, but one fact, they are not popular any more and i believe freightliner is the only company that still makes one here in america and it is the Argosy. PROS: -excellent turning radius -better view of the road (no hood) -sit up higher -makes vehicle length shorter so you can run some roads you normally couldnt run with a 53 footer CONS: -rougher ride as you sit ontop of the steer axle -have to raise entire cab to get to engine -first at the scene of accident even though a hood is a false sense of security -doghouse OLDER COEs ONLY -fuel mileage as the entire front is practically flat. this is my opinion on cabovers. if i was ever gonna buy a truck i'd probabally buy an argosy.. it is a nice truck...http://dieselducy.com my trucknet blog the LOVE of MONEY is the ROOT of ALL EVIL! Answer: Thanks Ducy....i plan on getting into trucking.....and i think i would feel more comfortable in a cabover because of the turning radious and such....But until i start driving who knows i might feel better driving in a conventional. Answer: After you've been driving for a couple of weeks, that won't be a concern. Most companies have conventionals, anyway. Answer: I read a study awhile ago that showed an International cabover to be more aerodynamic than a W900. This was because while the front of the cabover is flat, it is a single surface. The W900 had multiple flat areas that caused more turbulence and as such decreased aerodynamic efficiency. Answer: this is true while it is flat, the corners are rounded so the wind kind of "goes around" the cab..http://dieselducy.com my trucknet blog the LOVE of MONEY is the ROOT of ALL EVIL! Answer: by the way, i am a rare breed.. most people would rather have a conventional.. the cabover is a dying breed .. but ill always like them..http://dieselducy.com my trucknet blog the LOVE of MONEY is the ROOT of ALL EVIL!
