Class A CDL=Class C test?
Question:
I am going to take my Class A CDL written test on Wednsday the 5th. If I pass (hopefully) I start trucking school on Thursday. My father had to take the test to renew his CDL last year and had to also take the Class C test. He wasn't aware of having to take his Class C test and barely passed (hadn't taken Class C test in over thirty years).
I was wondering if this is a fairly new policy in CA as he did not have to take it when he renewed before? When I picked up my forms at the DMV I was not informed of this (typical DMV). Just wondering as I am studying for both tests.

Answer:
You need to contact a few members from TruckNet that live in Cali and ask them.
Do a 'search' of their names and send them a Private Message asking (in detail), the questions you need answered.
Here's a few names for you to check out.
    Rooster Cruiser
    Scubadiver
    Sleepyhead
    Erik R

They're friends of mine and I'm sure that these guys can (and will), help you.

Answer:
Every state has different rules pertaining to evaluating or re-evaluating a driver's basic knowledge.
Some common factors used by states to determine re-testing:
Age of driver
Number of tickets since last renewal
Medical concerns brought to the states attention
Number of years since last test
IMHO it never hurts a driver to review the standard rules of the road every few years.
Answer:
When I moved to CA from WY, I had to take all of the tests over including the class c test almost didn't pass it and the woman tells me that if i don't pass it she can give me my license but i passed, barely, after a couple hours at the DMV.
In my opinion, i would look over both handbooks and be ready to spent a good amount of time at the local DMV

Answer:
Thanks for all the help.

Answer:
The DMV system here in California is a joke.
If you are an California resident and you want to obtain a Class A permit, then you will have to take the basic class c test in addition to all the class a tests (airbrakes, combo's, double/triples, ect).
If you are moving here from another state then you need to take all of the above test's also and sometimes they might make you take a driving test but that is rare.
The one catch is that lets say you renew/transfer your license and the following year want to add an endorsement on your cdl, the state will require you to take all of the tests over again including the test for the endorsement that you want to add. In simple terms, if you renew your CDL on 01-05-05 and on 01-05-06 want to add an endorsement, the state will make you take all of the tests over again even though you just renewed your licence a year ago and its good for another 4 years. The state says they do it to keep the drivers here up to par but at 65 dollars a pop for all the tests I think they do it to keep the buget going.

Answer:
Well I just passed my written test this morning. I took the combination (class a), air brakes, tanker, general info and Class C tests. Only missed one question which was on the general info test.
If you come through Humboldt County CA, watch out for an American Truck Schools truck. I might be driving.

Answer:
Congrats on the passing grade
In Ohio, you can add endorsements with no added previous tests.
I don't plan on adding anything soon.
17 yrs ago I had the "chauffers" license, but let it laps and then had to take the CDL test to get everything back(I could have grandfathered way back). It was a pain, but went relatively easy overall.
Good luck on the schooling.
