HASMAT help...
Question:
ive taken all the online practice tests... do fine on all the test except for Hasmat...
reading through my study guide, trying to make myself learn all the info there is to know about hasmat.. WOW...
is there any hints or help anyone can give me as far as the Hasmat testing goes...
thanks
Tinman.

Answer:
Although I don't have the HazMat endorsement, it should be almost like any other part of the CDL test......common sense.
When I took my CDL test, I wasn't sure if I wanted HazMat or not, so I asked the guy behind the counter. He said, "If you don't pass, we don't charge ya for it." (this was many moons ago )
I took it, without actually studying it and missed passing it by 1 answer. All I did was read the questions and apply a little common sense to it. Maybe I went about it wrong, but hey, I was close!
From what I hear nowdays, the answers to the questions are covered in 'the book'. Read, study and then read and study some more. Sit down with someone and have them 'give you' the practice tests verbally. Have them check your answers.
You'll get it.

Answer:
It seems where a lot of students go wrong with the HazMat section is that they "try to learn everything" and end up getting confused. Unlike the rest of the sections, Haz Mat presents way more info than most drivers really need to know.
You should have a CDL manual from the state you are going to take the test in, and there should be sample questions at the end of each section and/or at the end of the chapter. Work on knowing the answers to these questions and see how you do then.

Answer:
First of all it's haZmat, not haSmat. That might be your first problem. BTW i've had mine since 93.
What state are you licenced in?
To get a feel could you answer these questions?
1)What should you do when approaching a railroad crossing?
2) i just picked up 456 pounds of corrosive material (batteries), the rest of the stuff on the trailer is paper making a full load. Which placard do i need (if any)?
3) i got 15,000 pounds of groceries in the trailer; Some of the stuff also going to store is stuff that a grocery store would stock such as insect spray and also a few boxes of rat poison----about 1000lbs of it. Of course, there's also regular groceries on the trailer such as potato chips, candy, oatmeals etc. Am i cool to go? There's no need to placard. Or is there?

This may help somebody:
I like the site www.cristcdl.com. Go there, go to online testing, and click on some practice tests. Try to answer the questions after you have studied your manual. No matter where you take your test, these are the kind of questions they will ask. If you can pass all of these online tests with flying colors, chances are you will also pass the tests at your DMV as well.
By the way, they have hazmat, general knowledge, and all the sections required for commercial licenses A and below. I believe practice tests are a great studying aid.

Answer:
jack...
trust me... ive been taking these tests at that site for a month or so now... it has helped ALOT...
thanks for all the help with the haZmat!!!

Answer:
Answer the above questions.

Answer:
Tinman,
I've noticed hazmat placards and tables for years (since I started EMT training in '97) and dreaded taking a test. It all looks pretty daunting. I didn't take the test at DMV because I neaded the three dollars for laundry while at school
but got a 91% in class. It ain't that bad. Have since taken the test online and did ok. Don't sweat it, if you haven't already taken it. Like uturn said, don't try to learn everything, most of the questions are common sense.

Answer:
thank you harrys...
i will be taking it in a day or so...
i start my fist class today...
im stoked...

Answer:
Got any questions about it then ask me, i have that endorsement now and spent 4 years in the USAF certifying Hazmat from Army units at Bragg to go on cargo planes, alot of it is confusing because you don't know the vocabulary and it tends to confuse just like the CDL manual did probably before some of you were explained about it. I'll try to help anyway.

Answer:
Tinman,
Here is a link you can use to study the HazMat test for CDL. I used the computer and book when I had to take my test. This is what I found very helpful just to make sure I got it right.
The test isn't as hard as you really expect it to be. Unless, they changed it from 2 years ago.
Anywho here it goes: www.cristcdl.com

Answer:
I'll answer them.
1)What should you do when approaching a railroad crossing?
If I am placarded and carrieing hazardous materials requireing such placards; I am required to put my four ways on to notify traffic behind me that I will be comming to a complete stop before the rail-road crossing to look & listen for trains, before proceeding across said rail-road tracks.
2) i just picked up 456 pounds of corrosive material (batteries), the rest of the stuff on the trailer is paper making a full load. Which placard do i need (if any)?
No placard is neccessary, because the weight of the hazardous materials on the trailer is lower than the required placarded amount. Paper does not require a placard and can be mixed with a corrosive.
Items meant for human consumption are not to (at any time) be mixed with any commodity that is required to be placarded. Since the 1000 lbs. of rat poison would require a 'Poison' placard, the shipment is illegal.
Don't flame me if I'm wrong on any of them---haven't taken the test in ages (not that these questions or questions of this format are on the test---THEY ARE"NT---), so I am just guessing from what little I do remember.
(i.e.- is it 1000 lbs. or 3000 lbs. that requires placarding on #3?)
Am I right? It's apparent this place is never going to change....then again; why should it? It gets the clientel it deserves.
