Working for Swift
Question:
Would like to know the good and bad about htis company.

Answer:
Like any company a lot about how "good" it is will depend on how good your fleet manager is and how well you get along with him/her.
One thing that you need to realize is that Swift is a HUGE company and as a result you are more a number than a person.
Swift also tends to be a bit top heavy with management and as a result things do not always get done in a timely fashion. You may spend all day waiting on your next dispatch only to go and pick it up and find out it was ready 2 days ago and now you barely have enough time to get it there.
Another thing is Swift's fueling policy. This can, and often does, cause you to drive several more miles, without pay, in order to follow the fuel route as Swift tells you where and how much fuel you can put into your truck at a given location. Most of your fuel will be "bought" at the terminals, which Swift has all over the country.
Some drivers end up finding themselves a nice little niche at Swift, most however do not and wind up moving on in a year.

Correction, a month or 3 is more appropiate. The majority never see a year there. Actually the majority dont last a year in trucking. It really is not what you think it will be.

The vast majority of rookie drivers have a "positive outlook"; it would be rather foolish to begin a new career without it, in my opinion.
Nonetheless, about 85% of those new drivers and their "positive outlook" leave the industry before the first year is over.
One needs a lot more attributes than a "positive outlook" to stay in this industry; 'qualities' like hardheadedness and stupidity come to mind (yes, I have those 'qualities' in abundance). BOL.

Swift has no respect for their drivers for the most part........the turnover rate tells the whole story.......no matter what is the issue.
It's a house of cards.
If you have a low self esteem, like the other guy to be the "expert", or want to be a punching bag with an always "guilty" fate......go with Swift...just hang around the drivers.....U will hear the truth. Sad that there is no real incentive to hear the real problems and do something about it and so many real "victims"

I went thru the "Swift " experience. Academy and all. All I can say in my opinion is,don't even bother. As the other fella said, they have no respect for their drivers. Pay for a good school and then look for a job. If you have to go company paid find another company.

What I wanna know is, why after all this time has this site not just added a group dedicated to Swift??? It would get like 80,000 hits a day with everybodies $.02 Go to Swift, one man's garbage is another man's gold. You love, you hate it, whatever the case, do your six months, keep your nose clean, and then reevaluate your situation and see what works for you. The one thing the I never really cared for at Swift was the lack of respect for senior drivers. Yeah, I know, a senior driver at Swift?? But you wouldnt even recognize them, they are the same run of the mill Joe Swift's as every other one crowding the Levittown-style terminals talking about how life is so bad all hours of the night. Boohoo!!!

From all I have read and heard, Swift is likly one of if not the worst places to work. I also read a post recently, were they reduced driver pay. When all other companies are improving driver pay because of the driver shortage, Swift does the opposite. Go figure that one out !!!Hunt, Fish, Shoot

From what I heard Swift went to the old slight of hand trick of per diem pay. Over all it sounds like Swift drivers took around a 2cpm over all pay cut, but when you figure in the per diem pay they are going to take home as much if not a little more each week. Where they really get screwed is in the benefits areas that are based on taxable earnings.
Swift is a huge company and unless you get lucky to get one of the few FM's that really give a daymn about the driver's on their fleet you are going to be a number and nothing more. I have also heard the same thing said about many other of the large training companies such as Schnieder, Werner, USX, etc.

It really doesn't matter because the nw FM's will soon become the old FM's. The bottom line for any FM (Fleet Manager) is the companies bottom line. If their concern for drivers impacts the bottom line they'll either change to the company line or find another job. New Fm's wont be new for long.
Other than a newbie that needs an entry level job to get their foot in the door. I have a hard time understanding why drivers stay with the bigger companies. Better said, why they stay with training companies.
