Question from possible newbie
Question:
I am considering training with either Schneider or Millis. My question is this: Do you think it is better to train in the winter...snow and ice, or wait until the spring? I appreciate all of your opinions!! Answer: I dont think it matters your going to have to drive in all weather conditions anyway so take your pick Answer: Personally, I think it is better to train in the spring when the weather is good. As a rookie with no tractor-trailer experience, you ae going to have enough to think about when driving that rig in traffic in good weather, you sure don't need to worry about how to handle snow and ice. After a spring/summer/fall of driving, you should have enough skill and confidence built up to tackle driving in hazardous conditions. Answer: If you have the choice I suggest training in the spring. That way you can gain some experience and confidence before tackling the slippery stuff. Answer: From my limited personal experience in OTR winter driving. I would have to say learn the basics and get comfortable with the rig in the spring / summer months then work up to driving in the "white stuff." I started my training in the middle of November and was pretty much doing circles between Washington State, eastern Montana, and Salt Lake City, UT. Eisenhower and Snoqualmie pass are not a whole lotta fun during blizzards. On the other hand, I am more confident in my driving ability after learning to drive "the big trucks" in the snow. Even though I have not had a chance to drive in it much since i am local driver now. Just gotta weigh the pros and cons of each side and see what is best for you. Answer: Sorry it has taken so long, but wanted to thank everyone for their advice. My gut tells me to wait until the spring...need some experience before going down the slippery slope. Thanks again!! Answer: Jump right in with both feet "New Guy" take the challenge,it will give you more confidence when you do make it to spring, don't worry driver the roads you'll probably be driving on will be plowed and if your trainer has half a brain he won't put you where you don't feel good about your abilities. I'm out Answer: Spring. You can get acclimated to the situation well before it has a chance to become critical. Answer: You may be better off being with a trainer in the winter to hopefully show you the do's and dont's. A lot of drivers will tell you if it needs to be chained....it needs to be parked.
